Does any one have any experience with these gadgets & a recommendation would be really useful

Don't be suckered by the cheapo offerings that generally look like this. They're not negative scanners, instead of scanning they photograph a backlit negative and may not have the resolution you require.
 Look for a secondhand Epson V500, or buy one new if your budget will stretch that far. It will scan 35mm negatives, 35mm slides, 6x6 and 6x9 negatives.

I'd agree - those cheap ones are rubbish.

If its just for 35mm slides/negatives, the Plustek OpticFilm scanners are good. I think mine is the Opticfilm 7600i, there's probably several newer models by now. Costs about £200. It does give decent quality scans.
Though it is rather slow - if you have a large archive of negatives, it will take a long time to scan them all...
