Do bats use IR?

'cos whenever I stand having a fag in the darkness in the garden the flappy bastards keep circling and swooping at my face.

I feel like Count Dracula.

Found a dead one the other day. A long eared thing it was.

Feeding on the insects that are attracted to your body heat and smell CO2 ;)

Stay still and they'll swoop close without hitting you.

In the dark I'll find them accompanying me along a lane as they follow between the hedges. One got briefly entangled with my open jacket once. Fluttering wraiths.

Vampire bats have infrared sensors.  But they are only for sensing blood vessels close up, not for seeing at a distance.
