I never knew John but reading through this thread makes me feel like I missed out on something special. It's hard to feel anything but deep sympathy for the family in a situation like this. I only wish I'd had chance to meet the man, he sounds like a textbook example of a "good guy".

Dreadful and heart wrenching.

The actions of one thoughtless person can have such a profound and devastating effect on so many, I feel great sorrow for John and his family.

a textbook example of a "good guy".

That's a very good way of describing John in very few words.

I remember John's good-natured plain speaking friendliness. A fine Yorkshireman.
He was a consummate cyclist and also put a lot back into cycling.

John spoke about Bernard Mawson on the night before the last LEL that Bernard organised in 2005. I put that on youtube when Bernard passed away. That's inevitably attracted trolls. So I put a comment on to remind us of the kind of people there are out there.
One voice on the video is Melita Luxton, who organised LEL 2009. Mel took a lot of interest in the fate of Simon Doughty, another LEL hand, who suffered a similar fate to John, and is still with us.
One slight correction. Although he's rightly associated with all his fine work for the West Yorkshire DA of the CTC, he's originally from Derbyshire, as his accent witnesses.

Terribly sad news.   We first met on the '99 PBP - in the hotel bar beforehand.   Our paths crossed many times over the last 15 years.

What a senseless tragedy.

I last saw John on the North West Passage 200k in February 2013.  Id stopped by the roadside after Settle and he went barrelling past with a big grin on his face, followed by a few hangers on at his back wheel.

RIP John.
