National 400 - 26/07/2014 - From Ingleby Barwick, Teesside
« on: 11 January, 2014, 05:11:20 pm »

Yay!  The National 400 is in the Calendar - it runs on the 26th July and has an opening date for entries from the 1st March.  I'm really looking forward to this, not least because it is starting from All Saints Academy in Ingleby Barwick, a mere 1km from my home.  This is the location we ran the 50km Tees & Cake, the 100km Keep to the Roads! and the 200km Ralph Cross from last year.  The National 400 is being organised by the mighty VC167!

We had a load of local cyclists come along for the 100km and 200km events.  Approx 75% of the riders were not AUK members for my events, but local cyclists keen to try some Audaxing.  I'm going to launch a promotional campaign locally and see if we can get people interested in riding a 400km event... I know it is a big ask for those who've not ridden further than 200km, but the route looks totally stunning.  VC167 are promising a dawn descent from Yad Moss, which is perfect, looking out across the Northeast of England towards the coast and hopefully a clear sunrise over the North Yorkshire Moors in the distance.

Do I sound excited?  It is already in my calendar and I'm going to sign up on the 1st March.

Climbing Yad Moss

The view from the top of Yad Moss down Teesdale to the Cleveland Hills on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in the distance.

I will have to miss this. Last year was such a blast I wanted to ride the national 400 again. I left June free and they go and organise it i July!

Well I hope everyone has fun and I will be thinking of you.

Enjoy.

I'm sure this will be a fantastic ride; shame it clashes with a wedding I'll be attending.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Ooh, quite possibly.  Is riding 400 km sensible a week before the national 25 mile TT?

Yeah, probably.  See you there Shymu.

Booked it last year, but got a DNS due to a nasty stomach bug, if all goes well I'll make it this year :)

Oooh, nice - any ride over Yad Moss must by default be a good ride! Too bad the Scottish 1,300 is Monday the same week.

Hmm - let's think:
Start is 11 hours and 300 km from the finish of Blacksheep's 1300
Could drive down from Ardrossan I suppose, but after 4 days with very little sleep this might be "unwise".

Bugger, Im on holiday then and will be out the country.

Did you really have to include those tantalising pictures in the OP?  Family Brymbo's in the IoW that week  :(
The present is a foreign country: they do things differently here.

Durham Teesside airport is, of course, only 12km from the start and there are three return flights with KLM every day from Amsterdam.

Would the family notice if you 'popped out for a bit' ?

I'm in. Really excited about this. Quite a few of the local riders are interested too and word is out via social media.

I'd really like to ride it.

But I really want to help! It's my place to help - it's my club organising it!

Helper's ride FTW!

Hugo15 has been helping generate some social media enthusiasm on Facebook and various forums... It was thanks to his help in getting the word out about my events last year which led to so many new Audaxers coming along.

I hope we see a good turnout of local cyclists who wouldn't normally think of doing a 400.

I'm looking forward to this event, and as fboab mentioned; food, shelter and succour are included. (I just don't know what succour is).

Helper's ride FTW!

If I knew what an FTW was I think I'd be up for a Helpers Ride as I too am expecting to be brewing tea, making butties or whatever.

I looked up FTW on Google and it suggested "For The Win, used to designate agreement or excitement" which didn't really help.
