I've been meaning to run this ride for a while  :)

Does anyone fancy a ride from Penrith Down to Morecambe/Lancaster through the Eden Valley, either as a Friday Night ride or a Saturday ride? The ride goes through the middle of some Lovely scenery, fleeting with the Lake District, Dales and Bowland Forest.

Here's the details:-
Distance: 98km
Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4347661
Net Climbing: -200m!
Date - Saturday 5th April
Start - 10am at Penrith Station

I'm thinking about either last weekend in March or First weekend in April. For a night ride we could stop at Tebay Services, and extra to that there would be options during the day to stop at Sedbergh where there are a couple nice cafes.

Transport wise Penrith is on the WCML, and not far from the Settle-Carlisle line (8km) at Langwathby. At Morecambe there are Northern services out, or it's a little way down the tarmaced railpath back to Lancaster which puts you back on the WCML.

Riding :D

Interested, if embarrassingly lacking in fitness.

Fancy it but not sure about timing old Shroom. Its also a bit spendy on the railroad.

Interested, but can't make the last weekend in March as I'll be in Brussels drinking beer.

I could run this later if it suits people more, I was just looking for sensible dates.

Why they don't run off peak night traveller runs I do not know. We are paying for the infrastructure 24 hrs a day. They do after all have to relocate trains overnight.

I'm very interested and I can make both dates (subject to checking with Helen in case she's got something in mind and the AUK calendar).
The Chorlton (CH) massive keep asking me about more night rides; I'll spread the word

I think that this is a ride that Jurek would enjoy  ;)

It sounds interesting. It is indeed a wonderful part of the country, some of which Mrs. Wow and I traversed when doing our Lowestoft-Ardnamurchan ride a few years ago.

Another thought:- if we do it as a night ride, could we get the cafe in Morecambe Arndale (?) to open for us ?
I bet they're still talking about the last time we were there.

mcshroom: I reckon this is worth also posting on Cyclechat.

Probably wondering how they ended up serving so many veggie breakfasts in one ride, they were a bit surprised at that ;D
I'm sure we could, depending on numbers, and it would be a good chance fo you to chat to them about the Manchester FNRttC in August.

I'll post it on cyclechat, but first I'm going to have to look at whether it's too late for train tickets. If so I might need to move it back a couple months.

Interested but I'll need to book a pass out (and without access to the boss's diary I'm not sure what we are doing those weekends)

If its the first weekend in April then I'm in (will still be in Majorca in March).
I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo

Either weekend is ok for me at present - but would need to get booking train tickets fairly promptly. Any decision on a date yet?

Right - there seems to be more liking for the later date than the earlier one, and the April date is in summer time (so will obviously be warm - honest ;D)

Penrith seems to be a bit harder to get trains to than Carlisle. Last train from the North is in at 21:39, from the South is 22:35 (20:18 last on Settle-Carlisle Line)

Late morning start on Saturday would probably be better. We'd probably finish at about 5pm then. Unless people really want it to be a night ride, I'm going to go for 10am on Saturday 5th April.

Cor, there are some surprisingly affordable trains from Mordor Central, audax o'clock start notwithstanding.

Definitely maybe.
My sister lives near Garstang so there's a possibility that I could leave the car at her place, get the train up from Lancaster and then, effectively, ride back to her place.

£7:50 to get to Penrith but £18 to get home  ...... a shorter distance... I'll never understand rail pricing!

Do-able though.... :)

Doable from Rugby but silly money.

We may be in that neck of the woods only a week or two before though on tour.

Single fare from Lancaster is a sensible price, plus I get a nice, 10 mile warmup ride(!) - just need to see if sis is around that particular weekend.

Fares from here decidedly spendy and If I take the car would be the best part of a couple of tanks full. As time goes by, I am beginning to realise that travel which we took for granted not long ago, may well become unaffordable some time soon. I wonder where I can buy a smock and straw hat?
