I am going to dinner with some friends tomorrow night so decided to make a Banoffee pie for them.

Found the condensed milk, found a pressure cooker to cook it in, gave it one hour (still liquid sloshing around inside) so gave it another 1.5 hours (pressure cooker a bit old and not pressurely).

No digestive biscuits so crushed up some Leibnitz Butterkeks.

I just opened the Condensed Milk - still liquid. Clearly it's different stuff here. So I need to do Plan B which is the other recipe (without boiling it in the tin) which adds more sugar and butter and doesn't taste as nice.

I have bought some whipping cream but will have to do it by hand with a whisk as no electric mixer in my flat.

I think I bit off a bit more than I can chew. At least I have the bananas!

The boiling it up didn't work either - I think German Condensed Milk is Wrong somehow.

However now the resulting liquidy stuff is cooling some edges are going slightly caramelly/crispy so I may rescue something.

But it will not be the Proper Banoffee Goodness so my chums may be disappointed.

At a guess, it might be that you have evaporated milk, rather than condensed. (Is evaporated milk still a thing? I have no idea).

65p for a 410g tin of Sainsbury's own brand or rather more for Carnation, though it's on offer right now.

Sainsbury's also sell tinned condensed milk, which is 56% sugar, but no tubes.

Indeed. I wonder if evaporated milk could be 'converted' to condensed by the addition of much sugar.
Now I've seen the nutritional info, I understand the difference!
Ordinary evaporated milk is about 12g sugar/ 100g milk, condensed is 56g per 100g; just another 44g sugar per quarter tin!

Our ketonauts are not beyond the occasional indulgent carbofest.

As a compulsive food label reader, I was pointing out the differences between the two types of canned milk; condensed is basically milk-flavoured syrup.
I have never made a banoffee pie.

Sugar cookery fascinates me.

Sainsbury's might not deliver to Germany though!

If they're charging 65p a tin, I hope they would.

55p in Aldi and Asda. And that's after recent shocking price hikes.

@Tim Hall: Of course evaporated milk is still A Thing. For certain purposes (eg pouring on fresh raspberries or hot apple pie) it is the Only Thing.

Jelly and vap was my favourite pudding when we visited my grandparents. Sitting next to Granddad got you the last spoonful of vap out the bottom of the tin. :D

It was proper condensed milk - they have loads of that in Germany.

I whipped the cream by hand this morning - and slightly overdid it so it started turning to butter and was unusuable.

I bought some more whipping cream on my way to the friends' house and whipped that up when I got there with their electric mixer. But I stopped before it got ideally thick as I was worried about it turning to butter again.

So they got a liquid gloopy banoffee pie without much caramel but they seemed to like it. And had seconds. I showed them a picture of what it was supposed to look like.

What percentage of German condensed milk is sugar?
Even if it was only half that of the Brits' (56%) it would still taste pretty sweet but it would not cook the same way.

the condensed milk I used was Bärenmarke.

Kondensmilch, wärmebehandelt, 10% Fettgehalt, 17% fettfreie Milchtrockenmasse

Nährwerte pro 100 g:
Brennwert: 637 kJ / 153 kcal
Eiweiß: 5,9 g
Kohlenhydrate: 9,8 g
Fett: 10 g

So perhaps not enough fat. No mention of sugar.

The Kohlenhydrate/carbs are all sugar in milk.

Try Milch-Mädchen by (spit) Nestlé which is 55% sugar (I checked).

This is what the Brits would call evaporated milk.
Sainsbury's evaporated milk is: 8.4% protein, 11.7% carbs & 9% fat.

I suggest you either by a sweetened condensed milk next time or try adding about 125g sugar for each 100g milk (yeah, really!) and dissolving.

Data point:  When faced with a lack of mixer, the temptation to mate a large fork and a drill is great.  However, it is wise to resist.  DAHIKT.

No drill meant this was also not an issue, fortunately.

I am tempted to try the drill plus toilet brush potato peeler combo one day.
