Daughter: Daddy, does anyone wear a tie at your work?

Me: Only the dorks, dear.  Only the dorks.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

But even the dorks don't wear cummerbunds.

Once you no longer feel the need to be properly dressed in public - why stop at collars? A singlet is very practical, and tracky bottoms much more comfy that trousers - who wants a belt when you can get 3 for 2 at MacD's? Plus when vomiting later in the evening a tie and shirt is double the laundry. Similar appliese to underwear worn inside clothing - what is the point? Unless your are showing a label just don't bother, only you will know.
Likewise with shaving - it os a drag so why not develop stubble and then you can cut back on the early mooring ablution time - eventually showering can be dispensed with too. All that formal nonsense - gone! You can lay back and enjoy a six pack and the telly while you can see it over the hill.
It is a shame they are stopping picking the kids up in PJ's and doing the Tesco run in a onesie. These are the garments of the future.

The 'garments of the future' are silver jumpsuits according to Hollywood. Unless, of course, you were a devotee of Space 1999 & UFO. In which case it's racing driver overalls, string vests, mini skirts and purple acrylic wigs.

Thinking about it, a cummerbund wouldn't look out of place . . .

Tors, don't tell me you aren't partial to donning a string vest, mini skirt and purple acrylic wig!

Better a cummerbund than a gash of white between waistcoat and trouserband, and better either than showing where the facings of the dress shirt end---and better that than showing an untucked shirt. If you are tall enough not to be able to find waistcoats then a cummerbund is very useful, even as you get fatter.

Traditionally evening wear demands silk socks, but they're not robust enough to tuck your braided trouserlegs into while riding, so I stick with long fine woollens.

Merino socks, surely?

As for all that palaver with the shirt, why not dispense with the waistcoat, and wear a t-shirt? :demon:

Road shoes or winter boots with formal dress?
With morning wear I would suggest off-road SPDs, with pipeclayed Altura overshoes in place of spats. For a white tie ball then a patent leather or highly polished road shoe, and a carefully fettled bike for high-speed getaway when somebody notices the gash left by your cleats in the parquet.

Well, that's three Black Tie events in three weeks and no cummerbund. However tonight braces get an airing for the first time, and I have a tie-up bow tie to master, with a strapon as fall back...
It is simpler than it looks.

On further reflection: one reason I used to prefer a waistcoat* is that a cummerbund does get a little in the way of a comfortable posture on the drops.

*Of, you will be relieved to know, extra long cut. Alas I am no longer the beanpole I was and it's completely impossible to find a replacement economically. The constriction of bending over a cummerbund when awheel is possibly more salient the thinner you are.
