Are they an acceptable item of dress for dinner now, or are they infra dig?
It is simpler than it looks.

Pass the mind bleach, please!

Yes with a tuxedo, if you think they suit you. Otherwise, no.

Being already quite barrel-shaped I would personally avoid them (and go for a waistcoat instead), but it's not like I ever get invited to black-tie things anyway.

I am no fashionista. I like them but suspect they've gone 'out' as the population's visceral obesity has increased.

A really good waistcoat is fun though.

Important to make sure they are the 'right way round' : peas should roll down them and hit the floor, not get caught in the folds.

I don't think a gentleman should be peaing on his cummerbund.

Apparently it's the other way around - pun partially intended - as one is supposed to be able to use it as a convenient place to tuck one's opera tickets (not a euphemism).

The original gownless evening strap.

Cummerbunds, like black t-shirts, are one of those things that make you fat by association.

I tend not to wear them but I a!ways try one on just in case it works with my waistline, maybe this year...

waistcoat - of the "interesting" variety.

Don't get to wear it very often these days but I have a silk shirt that's an ivory coloured front with a batik back, looks normal until you take your jacket off.

Next question - self tied or clip on tie?

Self tied every time for me.

Always a real tie, but only because there is nothing cooler than wearing it untied towards the end of the evening, or even better walking through town  the next morning!

I still wear one.  It's useful if you only have a brown belt to match your black shoes, because no-one will discover this cardinal sin,

And yes, the pleats should face upwards, which seems wrong but isn't.
