Camping weekend Fri 5th-Mon 8th February
« on: 02 February, 2016, 06:51:26 pm »
Short notice, I know, but anyone fancy coming?
I will be setting off from Milton Keynes on Friday morning, hoefully very early if I wake up.
80 mile ride planned to get to the campsite. I'll be riding very leisurely, probably with at least 2, if not 3 stops.
Then on Saturday and Sunday I intend to ride with Kajsa on her record attempt, so that could be about 100 miles at around 12-13mph.
Going home Monday and need to be home before 6pm.
I doubt I'll be having a barbeque etc, more likely to find a nearby Wetherspoons (There's one in Great Malvern) or other cheap local eatery.

Campsite is Blackmore Camping and Caravan site near Hanley Swan, near Great Malvern, Worcestershire.

Non campers could always come and ride with Kajsa as well.

Hotels nearby. The Wetherspoons in Great Malvern is a hotel. Travelode, Wetherspoons Hotel and Premier Inn at Tewkesbury, about 10 miles away.

I'll switch on my live tracker when I leave on Friday so anyone who wants to meet me on the way can.

I'm babysitting that weekend. I'm too slow for a Kajsa ride at the moment (tried it last month!) but with the weight loss regime in full swing hope that I will have lost enough lard to be able to keep up in a couple of months.

I'm not sure if I'm currently fast enough for a Kajsa ride, but there are cheap direct trains to Great Malvern from here, so it might be a good way to find out... *ponders*

Oh, Great Malvern. I'm not up for camping in February, can't this weekend even if it were summer, but could be up for a quick day in GM. Maybe.
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

Even if you don't ride with her, I expect she'd like people come out to say hello and show support etc.

I might be up for driving over on Saturday and saying hello to people. Can't ride or stay overnight, though  :(

Where/when will Kajsa's ride be starting?

I assume the route will go up on Strava nearer the time.

ETA: https://www.facebook.com/events/1531591360503958/ Suggests Sunday's ride is starting from the campsite.  Probably the case for Saturday's too?  I'm guessing that she's using caravan tactics...

Sunday 7th is up on Facebook as a 100 mile day but there's still no route AFAIK.
I assume it will start from Blackmore campsite because that's where she say's she'll be staying.
Not sure what time either, but I would guess around 7:30am start.

She was saying last weekend she was worried no-one would join her from Worcester!
And is still looking for suggestions for a flat route, I think

The Severn Vale is rolling rather than flat. It's nothing like so vicious as the hills north of Worcester. I have memories of a day's ride I did from Shrewsbury to Cheltenham in 1984. It was utterly exhausting, but the last bit from Worcester to Cheltenham was much easier.

I'm planning on coming over for the Saturday post ride socialising and eating if that's okay.

I guess I'll head for the campsite and trust that I'll be able to identify the group  ;D

I think she has planned 100 mile rides every Sunday but is always after company on rides.
Perhaps you could invite her down to Pompey. Maybe on a Wednesday pub night? I've offered her a bed in Milton Keynes, so the distances between Nottingham and Pompey are about right and I already have the routes sorted.

I'm not sure we have a group and no plans are made for Saturday evening. I don't know what Kajsa will want to do, but I have it in mind to visit Wetherspoons in Great Malvern for my tea but I'm pretty easy about what I do. I can always leave my live tracker on if I go to 'spoons and post something here (if I can get a signal) Plus I'll be on my Raleigh Sojourn with tri bars and I can hang my OYTT jersey from my tent. Kajsa will be in a caravan.

If you're hanging round on the Sunday, there is a Thai restaurant that does an excellent buffet lunch in Colwall.

A logical one would be along the Welsh side of the Severn  to Chepstow (certainly rolling roads), over the bridge and back up through the lanes (or even A38) on the other side through Gloucester and back to the campsite which is pretty well flat.  The Sunday weather forecast shows SW winds, so that would be pretty reasonable offering a bit of shelter on the way out and a tail wind back.  As a local, I might pop out.

I wish I could, but it's Superbowl weekend and I have friends already coming over.

*Waves to all, and bonne chance to Kajsa*

I have already offered her and her mum a visit to Pompey with a stop off at a hostelry en route - on a Wednesday night - with a sleepover at Hummers Halls. Then she can ride back the next day. I can accommodate you as well sweetie  :-*

Barakta appears to have given me lurgy and then sodded off to London.  (She's nice like that.)   :(

Nothing serious - the usual sore throat and sniffles - but my lungs are getting rattly, which doesn't bode well for cycling (or indeed camping) at low temperatures.  More importantly, it means I ought to stay well clear of anyone attempting a record.

Some other time, then, I suppose...

The Great Malvern 'Spoonies is rather a spectacular one, IIRC. I wish the weather was better for you.

Just noticed this.

Incredibly I did a ride from Worcester to The Stables Café at Saul only yesterday (and back) which was 82 miles.  A lovely route both ways and using a NCN Cycleroute past Glos Docks to Maisemore.

Might be up for a re-run tomorrow too.

Are you definitely starting at 7.30 from the campsite?

Ooh interesting! What time might you be at Saul? I'm in the area at a Lord Lieutenants lunch  :P will you have your tracker on?
It is simpler than it looks.
