FNRtSR - Carlisle to Newcastle 28/9/12
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:11:12 PM »
So here's the suggestion for something a little different  ;D

Meet up at Carlisle Station at midnight, then ride to Brampton and sort of follow the Hadrians Cycle Way (I've avoided dropping into Haltwistle and climbing the really steep bits round Vindolanda by using the Military road in the attached route). The ride finishes using the Tyne riverside path which ends up on the North bank of the river riding under all the bridges in Newcastle. [Route]

The ride is 113km with 1100m climbing. Most of the climbing in the first part of the ride, and the end of the ride follows the river so is pretty much flat/downhill.

There isn't much that will be open going over the Pennines, but there is a 24hr Tesco in Hexham (75km) where we can call in on the way and there's a Wetherspoons  (The Quayside) on the river front in Newcastle which I'd suggest we aim for to get breakfast. It opens at 8am and is not far from Newcastle Station.

Carlisle is on the WCML, and Newcastle on the ECML, with a railway line following the same valley as we'd be riding so getting there/back should be possible from most places :)

If there was interest, it wouldn't be difficult to add a bit at either end and make this a Coast-2-Coast ride either :D

Anyone up for this?

What a silly idea!  I'm interested.   ;D

Would Saturday be 'breakfast then home' or would it likely take a FNRtWhitstable turn?  'Cheap' tickets are already gone, but I can still stomach current ticket prices, but a known return time would help.

Also, anyone likely to arrive in Carlisle early?  If I do come, I'll be getting in at 22:50 (can't get in any later, or earlier without taking time off from work).
Violence is the only language printers understand.  Well, that and Postscript, I suppose.

Don't worry, whatever time you arrive in Carlisle, it'll be shut! :D

We end in a pub round the corner from the station so the finishing time would be pretty flexible. I wouldn't expect to get to NCL until about 8:30-9am though so I wouldn't go too early. There may be some takers for a trip out to Tynemouth (another 20-ish miles round trip) who would probably be setting off late morning.

I'll probably be there quite early as the last train to Carlisle from Whitehaven gets in at 21:39. There's another 'spoons just outside the station (shares the same car park) which could be used for waiting in. It would also be possible to do a quick trip to the Solway first if you wanted a Coast to Coast experience.

Probably. I'll get an open return from Darlo to Carlisle, that way I can use the return bit for the Newcastle-Darlo bit, assuming I can't be arsed to ride. Or I could use the open bit for a late seasons Lakes weekender...

Looks like I'll be on the 22.56 arrival, too. The only other sensible arrival is 21.03, which is a bit early for a Friday night in Carlisle :-\

Moving on to more important matters, what pub are we going to in Newcastle? There is a 'spoons (The Union Rooms) over the road from the station (opposite Stephenson's statue), and there must be other places that do breakfast. Dunno about bike security, though.

I'd come up with the Quayside (a Lloyds No1 so another spoons name). It has benches outside the front so they could form some locking arrangement. I'll ring round any places I can find before then (or go and talk to them) so I'll look into bike storage.

I'm open for better suggestions. I was looking for cafes but they all seemed to open a bit too late really.

There'll be one! The Quayside isn't that far from the station, either.

There's a decent cafe inside the Grainger Market, but I doubt you can get bikes inside. I'm happy enough to go to either 'Spoons, and the Quayside is a better place to sit than scruffy ole Westgate Street.

Done!

Arrive Carlisle 22:50; depart Newcastle 12:25.

I shall be collecting the tickets from the station, so much less chance of losing them.  ::-)

I'm going to reccy the route on the 18th August so I'll have a better idea after that

I might come if I'm not ruined off the back of something else, and either split off route early and ride on up to my folks avoiding Charver Central, or run the full gamut of my misspent yoof, tour the toon and then ride up to the Cheviots.

Fuck a doodle doo: £116 for a train ticket! You are having something a fuck of a lot bigger than a giraffe there...

IF I catch a train from Crewe at 0700ish on the Friday (arrives Carlisle 2 hrs later),do the ride & cycle back to get a 1900ish train from Carlisle to Crewe on Saturday evening I can do the travelling for £17.

Trains out of That London on a Friday night always seem to be expensive. Even 12 weeks away the cheapest ticket is apparently £67 (and 1st class ???)

Sounds good - I've taken the plunge and bought tickets while they're still cheap. Arrive 22.56, depart 12.17. (For anyone looking to go from York, it seems much cheaper and also a bit quicker to go via Newcastle than Manchester; just searching for York-Carlisle tickets on the East Coast site only brings up the Manchester options which cost £44.50 for a single! :o)
