Is there such a thing as a small AA-battery lantern that is bright enough to actually read by when it's dangling a foot above your head?  A headtorch works but is uncomfortable and a bit awkward.  My Energizer lantern/torch is too wimpy to avoid eyestrain.

fine for anything from reading to MTBing.

I've got one (Coleman?) but have never really used it - I use one of the thick edible candles in a jam jar (you need to be lying down), added entertainment when bivvying afforded by crane flies flying into the flame.

If it still works and I can still come in October I'll bring it along.

I have one of these:

Mini LED Camping Lantern - FenixTorch.co.uk

I can confirm that when one is dangling a food above your head, you can indeed read by it.  Apparently, they're good for 25 hours on 2 x CR2032 cells.  I reckon it's more like about three or four good hours of reading light and another ten of gentle "finding stuff" light.

I have one of these and can recomend it for general lighting.  I have not tried to read by it but I would think it would be bright enough.

Fenix L2D with white 'vibrator' diffuser hood. Has the great advantage of doubling as a torch and a bike light. Hang it from a loop in the ceiling.

I'll bring it to the weekend.
It is simpler than it looks.

A head torch in a white sock works fine, as does a white plastic bag.

Got one of those in each tent.  Work very well.  Fold them up inside when we pack so we don't ever forget them.
Getting there...

My partner and I were both able to read with the light given by the Hope 1 (on setting 2) reflected off the white inner of our family tent - much better than head torches etc.
