FNRtSR Carlisle - Newcastle 18-Sep-15
« on: 29 June, 2015, 11:41:17 pm »
Right, after last year driving the sag wagon, I fancy riding this one again this year. Anyone up for a fourth go? :D

The ride seems to work as it is, so I'm not going to change anything. We meet up at Carlisle Station at 11pm, then ride to Brampton and sort of follow the Hadrians Cycle Way. The ride finishes using the Tyne riverside path which ends up on the North bank of the river riding under many the bridges in Newcastle before arriving for breakfast on the Quayside. [Updated Route]

The ride is 102km with 820m climbing. Most of the climbing in the first part of the ride, and the end of the ride follows the river so is pretty much flat/downhill.

There isn't much that will be open going over the Pennines, but we will stop at a 24hr Tesco on the way out of Carlisle (about 3km), then there is a 24hr Tesco in Hexham (75km) where we can call in on the way. After that we head for  (The Quayside) on the river front in Newcastle to get breakfast. It opens at 8am and is not far from Newcastle Station.

Carlisle is on the WCML, and Newcastle on the ECML, with a railway line following the same valley as we'd be riding so getting there/back should be possible from most places :)

Oh and feedback from previous years - it can be COLD on the ride, wear warm stuff. On a clear night you get a brilliant view of the stars though as a trade off for the cold :)

Riding :D

Not me I'm afraid, I'll be watching England play Fiji in the rugby world cup.
Shame; this is an excellent ride.

:( - That's a shame. England-Fiji should be a good match though, have fun :)

Btw. for anyone who fancies riding, train tickets are now available on your ticket seller of choice for the whole weekend.

I have to say that this is one of my favourite rides, day or night.

Count me as a maybe, health permitting.

Indeed, but I'm not keen on the Carlisle-Brampton bit during the day. Not really found a suitable alternative though.

I'm a very highly unlikely, I'm afraid, but never say never.

I'm up for it again. Might even bring my wife.
I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo

Not me this year as I'm spending the summer away at sea, getting fat(er) and having to make do with reading books about cycling or hearing about all the rides Mrs B and the kids are doing.

Can I be put on the Maybe list please? I am tempted to ride down from the Burgh (as in Edin) during the day and continue through the night before either cycing back up or catching the train. Is there a Farcebook page I can direct a couple of local mates to please? (members of this forum obviously)

Cheers,

Yeah, I'm definitely not able to do it. Been (semi-)accepted into Uni of Glasgow and I'll be moving up on the Saturday. Have fun!

Good news, which I sort of half missed last night, re: Glasgow

Bad news, re: Carlisle to Newcastle.

Will you need care packages of Kitson's pork pies? :)

Rumour in the local paper is that there's going to be a 24hr service station built next to Hexham soon, so by next year there may be a chance of hot coffee at the break. The bad news is that it'll probably be a Starbucks.

Yeah? Who else is up there?

Got to admit to taking an interest in your Strava recently, seems like lots of good cycling in and around the place. Who is the club (?) you ride with mid-week?
