lightweight browsers
« on: 18 December, 2008, 09:56:06 am »
I have an old tablet pc we are using for web browsing etc. It's running a strange 800Mhz processor, so is a bit slow . . .

I'm looking for an alternative browser to IE or Firefox (I like firefox but it is a bit resource-hungry).

Tried Chrome and I'm not very impressed so far - it remembers passwords even when told not to!

I had a similar old Laptop and followed advice here to run Ubuntu and it's Firefox Browser.

Ubuntu seemd to breathe life back into the old processor

Lightweight Linux distribution (DSL or Xubuntu) and Dillo. It will fly with DSL and Dillo.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Try an install of Opera - it's impressively efficient.

I forgot to add: 'and then install FreeBSD!'

Then you join the "useless suggestion" brigade!  Back in the corner and put your pointy hat on.

The problem is that there are some lightweight browsers - but I can't offhand think of one for Windows.

Opera's a very nice browser, but in its latest incarnation it's not so skinny.

So the answers to your question aren't as obtuse as they might appear ;)

try this

K-Meleon

or this

Opera's not so bad really.  The startup load is fairly high, but the CPU load and memory cost for each page load is far lower under Opera than under FF, Safari, or IE.

I'll take a look at k-meleon, it looks neat.

k-meleon looks like it is up-to-date and being maintained, which I suspect might not be the case for other Win lightweight browsers.

Maybe I should have specified that I'm not going to install a new os, it simply isn't worth the time and hassle.

I've found a set of old test figures. Interestingly, Opera does seem to be the all-round fastest on Windows. Chrome wasn't in the test.

Chrome is lightweight the way I am!
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Minimo (Baby Firefox) and Opera mobile

I managed to get both working on my ancient laptop.
