Inspired by the Great Cover Versions thread.
There are other covers that are odd and some that should never have been made.
For starters:-
I wasdisappointed by Larkin Poe's cover of or. To be Wild. To me it sounds too polite and musical. It lacks the energy of the original.
I found two Johnny Cash covers on YouTube; Jackson by Hillbilly Moon Explosion. Self consciously "quirky". The saxophones are OK, thobut.
Ring of Fire ( JC's version was, strictly speaking, a cover...) by Blondie. Too fast, too upbeat and too poppy with Debbie Harry as the world's oldest teenybopper.

However, I assumed that that thread is for abominations like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner.

What was the point of Nebula's cover of “I Need Somebody” (with Mudhoney's Mark Arm on vocals, it sez 'ere)? It sounds so much like Iggy & The Stooges' original that I had to check on Wikinaccurate that it really was a track on “To The Center” and not some catastrophic tagging fuckup or iTunes developing droid rot.

Pink Floyd (in general but especially) their cover of Comfortably Numb.
Pretty much everything Bowie did on Pin Ups (the only reason it's not his worst album is that there's the one with "the laughing gnome" nailed in at pole position).
All "R&B" covers of anything pre 2000.

Indeed.
The only cover of Comfortably Numb I am aware of is Scissor Sisters'. I get the impression that if you like that (I do) you probably won't like the Floyd original (which I really should seek out and listen to sometime!) while if you like Pink Floyd you will declare the Scissors Sisters version an ABOMINATION...

Hating the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb to the point of declaring it an abomination implies no small emotional investment in maintaining such an animus.

The Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb is brilliant and you are all idiots.
The Floyd version is good too. I have no difficulty liking both. I am obviously so much more sophisticated than you oafs.

Luckily my dad liked military bands, trad jazz and The Carpenters. Left the rest of the music field well open for me to like.

If you turn on the radio in the US (particularly the South), the entire dial is partitioned between Christian radio and country. I figure there has to be Christian country music. I just don't want to know.

I did manage to find a decent rock station broadcasting out of Reno once but thirty miles into the desert it faded to hiss… crackle… sprrrrrt… taxi for Mr Gambino…. While the Christian stations just kept on and on and on and on like the Energizer Bunrab.

I don't know if that holds true as a universal law - my dad introduced me to lots of pretty good stuff when I was growing up, eg Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, The Kinks.
But the stuff he is most into is hardcore folk, which has never really floated my boat - I don't actively dislike it, it's just not what I choose to listen to on the whole.
He never subjected me to Pink Floyd - I discovered them for myself. Went through a bit of a self-inflicted Floyd phase as a teenager (while most of my friends were into cool stuff like the Smiths and Jesus & Mary Chain).

He goes on about Pink Floyd a lot, though I think he's lost the ability to distinguish between the original and tribute versions of the band. I think he's still a bit twisted since he had to sell most of his records to pay for me. That's what happens when you don't take appropriate precautions after meeting a girl at a new year's eve bash (yes, I'm a bastard, possibly not a clever one though).
I think there are three stages to musical taste evolution – you start off listening to anything and everything – Nik Kershaw happily sidled up to the Sisters on Mercy on my radio-recorded C90s. Then you reach the age of musical ideological purity. The bands you admit liking have to pass strict tests. And even then you have to like the least liked of their albums – the difficult album or some crappy recorded bootleg live tape you got down the market. Live in the Embankment Bogs 1992. You burn those old compilations and purge anything suspect, even your memory.
The third stage – which not everyone seems to hit – is a recapulation of the first. You start to mix it all up again. There might be a fourth stage when Celine Dion seems like a good idea, but I hope not.
