We have a slowcoach and a phanta in the Den....

They'll head to the station to meet you by midnight gv!  Assuming that is where tom is aiming for :)

Still think we should give this ride a go during the summer at some point.  When it's warm enough to brew-up without freezing to death.  Or at least not on the night of the worst air quality of the year at the start of lurgy season.

Good luck everyone! I agree with Clarion - although it's been a very warm day down here, and the night promises to be warm as well, a July night ride would be rather good.

gv successfully navigated to the Den too, and after caffeination and flapjackery etc they are on their way, causing great confusion to the zombies leaving the rather noisy party over the road!

Altho I just realised I never got the last pot of coffee made because I got distracted.  Oops.

It was indeed warm - with a lovely tailwind to blow us up the hills, as well!

We didn't really get lost, apart from on the steep leafy hill just outside Whitby.  They made me do COR. With steps. :o

Ah, you mean the route across Larpool Viaduct. I was toying with that.

Never really lost. A slight case of too many gpses near the start. I succesfully enticed people onto the viaduct later with talk of tarmac. When it ran out at the far end of the viaduct phanta was Not Impressed. I wasn't impressed by the loose dog trying to bite my shoe either.

Just got in - so ....... thank you to riders and supporters.  Thoroughly enjoyed the ride over - quite magical.  Even the steps  ;)

After breakfast, Whitby was glorious.  (Those silly birds singing at 2am in Malton - they knew summat we didn't.)  Seemed a shame not to make the most of the weather.  Cycled down to Hawsker, then took the Moor-to-Sea routes through to Thornton-le-Dale and Malton, to get the train home.

Was I stupid?
- Once more - over the top of the Moors?  1 in 6 hills .... to climb?  Yup.
-  A tourer on thin tyres on those paths?  Yup.
- Into the teeth of the sou-wester that had helped so much overnight?  Yup.
-  A long, long day?  Yup.

OK ... so I was stupid.  Very stupid.  Terminally stupid.  And my legs hurt.

But it was a BRILLIANT ride  :P

Thank you again, all involved.

Later PS - it wasn't Venus we saw in that early morning break in the clouds, but Jupiter.   :smug:

Good stuff, growingvegetables! I didn't fancy riding back into that wind (though it was such a nice morning that had I known a less-A169ey route back, I'd have been very tempted).

FWIW, here's the route we actually rode: http://www.strava.com/activities/214791515

Sounds like you had a great ride, I'm glad the weather was favourable again.

Here's to next year and a return to normal...

Thanks everyone for a great ride, and particularly for putting up with me towards the end when I was slowing down a lot. Trying a night ride on a 'bent was a new experience for me. Whilst I felt I didn't manage too badly until the Hole of Horcum, lack of recumbent legs started to really hit me from Fylingdale on. I found that when tired my distinctly limited riding skills disappeared totally - to the extent that I could no longer balance moving off on any sort of incline and I couldn't spin and balance if my speed dropped off too much. This made the bottom end of the granny ring totally redundant and i rather slowed everyone up when I had to resort to shank's pony. I don't have any pics of the ride because my camera got left behind in the Friday evening repack as I threw stove, meths and coffee into the rack pack.

I learnt several things from this ride:
1) If I'm heading from the station to CL's abode and I pass Fulford Barracks, I've taken a wrong turn
2) The cramp I always get in my right calf at 1:30 every morning doesn't just hit me when I'm asleep. On my next night ride I'll have to set an alarm for 1:29 to remind me to unclip before it hits. Trying to balance, massage my calf and unclip all at the same time is a recipe for disaster.
3) I need to get more miles in on the bent before I take it on another night ride.
4) It's a lot easier to fall asleep whilst riding a bent than it is a DF. I had a couple of occasions where I woke up still pedaling, but taking a distinctly agricultural line
5) I need to sort out fitting panniers to the bike - the rack pack was rather overstuffed when the cooking equipment had to go in.
6) The views from the viaduct from the 'bent are somewhat unimpressive - lots of red brick wall either side, but not a lot else
7) CrossCountry train bike racks and the bent are not compatible. It was an interesting trip back North with a bike that wouldn't fit in the racks and the train stuffed to the gills with Newcastle supporters on the way to the match. In future I'm going to have to stick to East Coast or Transpennine Express with the bent when heading up or down the East Coast main line.

Oh - and Kim - I was distinctly wuss on the descent of Blue Bank. My top speed appears to have been just over 40mph. My excuse was that I didn't want to miss the right turn just after Sleights railway station...

Tried it hanging upside down from the rear wheel?  Shortening the boom might help (though I agree it's faff).

That'll do.

I don't think I was much faster, though in my defence the road was wet.  Tigerbiten's the resident maniac.
