Winter hostelling 2015/6
« on: 13 October, 2015, 07:33:14 pm »
The weather is changing, therefore time to consider if and where, we should have a winter break. Those of us who attended Ruthie's Clapham (N. Yorks) Off Road Fellowship week end  a while back, had a fantastic time, and it is therefore proposed as a possible venue. (Tad lumpy mind!)

The digs comprise a number of small bunk rooms within a converted stable block. Basic but all mod cons, child friendly and HEATED. Food in very friendly local pub is excellent and walking distant. Scenery is stunning.

What do peeps think? ( I am aware is still a northern tendency venue).

I could be persuaded.

As to timing I am open minded. Last time we were there was a November thinks, and weather was wonderful. BUT apparently swans are over from Russia a month early and the portents are not good........... ::-)  When is Ruthies's birthday?

End of January I believe. Probably best chance of using the sledge.

When is Ruthies's birthday?

Wednesday January 27th, and I'm free that whole week, including the weekends at each end.

The Dalesbridge weekend was marvellous. The weather was as good as it gets during the last weekend in November and the pub (the Gamecock, in Austwick) did absolutely superb food. It also has a great name. Woolly, Peli, Mrs. Wow and I went past to and from Dufton at the weekend.

There is another Bunkhouse in Clapham that seems to be free in January if that would be suitable: -

If you don't mind Freezing Your Bits Off then you can camp at Dalesbridge.      Just have to spend even more time in the Gamecock!

PB mentioned somewhere in Langdale at the weekend, I think this is the one:

(Yes, I know it's near-impossible by public transport)

No Deano, much better than that.

I'm making enquiries atm.   It is possible to get there by public transport, rail / bus, and there is limited parking available.

The place sleeps 24, is not as plush as Malham and I don't know the current costs but I will find out.   The location is behind the Old Dungeon Ghyl Hotel in the Langdale valley and is ideal for walking, climbing, easy and very very hard cycling.  The pub of course does great real ales and good if basic food.   It's a hikers bar, no pretence but a great place.

One of us has to be a member for us to book it so, as my membership lapsed some years ago, I am checking through my contacts to see what details I can glean before I rejoin as a member*.

Transport links:   West coast mainline to Oxenholme, local train to Windermere, cycle from Windermere or catch the bus.

You can of course cycle from further afield but coming from the west you'd need to go over Wrynose and Hardknott.

I was actually thinking about planning a trip for winter 2016 / 17 but if it becomes critical...

That would be excellent - but no need for it to be this year. Let's go with Canardly's flow for now.
