Me too(in case you need a tow  ;) )

Got round PBP ok, how hard can this be??

Probably take Portsmouth night ferry, and some slow trains plus some riding. I suspect Tours justifies a day as a pedestrian tourist  :)

Didn't get round PBP ok, how hard can it be??? Err...for me?...very :-)

But it looks like a cracking ride.
Proper audax self-reliance too by the looks of it.....no published times etc....love it.

So, so tempted....but I have to be sensible [which means not logging onto the site after a beer later today].

Finally booked ferries. So I guess this is really on!?!

Feels a bit unreal, what with the lack of buildup that PBP had. Anyway, allons'y!

How hard can it be? Fiendishly. It's orders of magnitude tougher than PBP. Aside the climbing and controls difference, throw in the heat of the day and you have a bona fide  challenge. One that'd get the better of many a seasoned audaxer. It is hard.

Random memories from when I rode it (or the first half of it). Not much use to anyone, but here you are:
- very very hot (high 30s at least) which was probably my undoing
- some very vivid hallucinations
- some very lumpy bits and questionable road surfaces
- small field, which gave it an intimate feel (more like Herentals than PBP or the modern LEL)
- just before reaching a secret control (on Puy Mary Pas de Peyrol - see today's TdF route) being greeted with cries of "Allez John" from a couple sitting  on a wall at who had nothing to do with the ride. They had driven up there and asked the controller what was going on. Andreas from Mannheim had just arrived and told them that I would be next.
- meeting a local rider on the descent who guided me through Aurillac. Very helpful.
- 2 of us going into a cafe for a coffee and a stamp - the owner seemed reluctant but later came over to us with a fridge-magnet thermometer souvenir each. I've still got mine somewhere.
- bumping into Mr and Mrs Valkyrie a couple of days before the ride - they just happened to be at the same place in the same town at the same time  as me
- after abandoning, riding back to Aurillac and spending  a night in a hotel, I got the train back to Tours. By coincidence another passenger was a rider who had packed. Passengers were complaining to the exasperated ticket inspector that the AC wasn't working, to which he replied that it was, but couldn't cope with such high temperatures
-meeting the  Chabriands at the finish

Here's the thread from  2012 https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=52045.0

Apparently nearly half the field had packed by the end of the first day (source:me)

The 2020 route was 15000 metres ascent going all the way up to 1600m peak
On PBP there is a school dinner every 50km
But you've booked the ferry now so it's too late to get cold feet :)

Enjoy yourself Matt, and best of luck with the ride.  It's also good to see your French is better than your German  :P

Turns out this was quite hot, and quite hilly. who knew ??
So hot (on the day), they generously gave  us another 2h to finish.

Any guesses as to Best British finisher, and
Furthest Riding Non profitfinisher?!

Sorry folks: it was the man-machine Veloboy!
But I rode the next furthest* of the event.

1000k of hot hills was enough: I was waaaaay outside the cuts by then. I knew the last 200 was tres flat, and in normal weather I stood some chance of clawing back the deficit. But as I pulled into that last control town the temperature noticeably ramped up (10:30ish?), and I just lost all enthusiasm.

What an adventure though! Official numbers:
47 started, 20 finishers

*Nick and Rich skipped about 200 of the hills, got back hours before me, and seemed to have a very nice time

Sorry folks: it was the man-machine Veloboy!

That was who I was congratulating  ;)

I have looked at doing le Douze-Cents a few times and haven't pushed the button yet. It has always looked like a tough event to finish for an average rider like me.
