Yes, I gained the impression from what I read that the scientists were looking for something that wasn't actually there.

That'll be the press release version.  If you read the abstract (https://academic.oup.com/jmammal/article/96/1/129/864820) it's pretty clear that what's interesting is that it's an association between a predator and potential prey species.
