Title: Yorkshire Grit 28/01/23
Post by: Graeme on 31 August, 2022, 11:54:21 pm
A friend of mine entered this last year. He then complained that it followed the sort of roads that get gritted. So, that's my first PBP qualifier entered. £10. To ride up and down gritted roads in the dead of winter. Perfecto.

Does it go on the V718?

I rode this one in 2019 as a PBP qualifier on the basis that

(i) it was earlier in the schedule than any event in Scotland (where the 1st 200km event was early March iirc)

(ii) Darlo Northallerton is a scoosh to reach from home in Edinburgh.

Will keep an eye on the calendar

No, it's all in that dull flat area between Leeds and York.  That quite appeals  :)

It is a fair bit different from the 2019 route since it starts in Northallerton, but it's the same deal, well-gritted roads ridable in most conditions.

My favourite comment from a rider in 2019 was that the highlight was passing the Heck Sausage Factory. We don't pass that anymore, but here's the route (also linked from the calendar page): https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38654991

You will be spending part of Sunday morning hosing the bike down with water, cleaning and lubricating it to get all the salt off, otherwise, come Monday, chain, sprockets etc will be going red with rust and seizing up eventually if left too long.

I hate salt on my bike in Winter.

Beetroot or vinegar are a must, though.

Well I closed it at the weekend, I've been warning people for months that it would sell out. Only the ten requests for places since then

This is getting rather close isn't it.

Engineering works on the east coast have scuppered my plan A of using the train, so I plan to have a leisurely drive down from Edinburgh Friday afternoon, Im staying at the Dorchester (*) in Darlington and then onwards to Northallerton early doors Saturday.

A need to be at Glasgow Airport 11am the next day will almost certainly mean I just skeddadle north pretty much straight from the finish.

(*) the Premier Inn Feethams.

I'd suggest a pint in Darlo, but I'm staying in Northallerton the night before :)

Have a pint at the House of Hop anyway!

103 riders away from the Scout Centre, looks a decent day for it.

Thank you Dean and team.  Good flat winter route, plenty of racecourses, good catering and facilities at HQ and ample parking.  10/10

Thanks Dean.
Really appreciate you organising a shorter route for those of us not up to longer distances.

Aw thanks Flite, I like a 50 too, and it fitted in well with the longer ride. There's always a more diverse field, not that I'm complaining about the equally lovely riders on the 200, who thoughtfully all finished by 19.30 so we could finish up and I could get home at a reasonable hour.

I didn't get many photos, but I did get one of the now-traditional wooden spoon prizewinner on the 200, it was a decent prize this year, I'll upload them tomorrow.

@Flite, were you the one with the amazing red Pogies on your bike? Must admit, I didn't recognise you from the last 50 from Mike's farm at Newby Wiske, apologies, but remind me next time!

My two anticipated rail replacement buses were unexpectedly replaced with actual trains so got home home from washing up duties a while back and have applied several rounds of restorative hand cream. I took no cake to the audax but ate quite a lot of it, did valiant battle with a lot of butternut squash armed with a dreadfully incompetent scout hut 'sharp' knife, drank a frankly ridiculous quantity of coffee and got to have a lovely catch up with some people I haven't seen in *yonks*. Excellent stuff!

That's me!
Combination of Reynauds and arthritis make them my only option in the winter.
And no excuse for motorists to say they didn't see me....

The 50 from Mike's farm at Newby Wiske was my first audax - I'm still around so it obviously made a good impression!

Excellent winter 200.

I got a tad confused around Thornton Bridge and ended up adding a bonus 0.5km by riding the inward route in error.  I quickly retraced but shouted at another rider who was making the same mistake.  I hope he turned round.

Thanks to Dean and his excellent team.

Just a shame the trains were off - a 2 hr train journey was replaced by a 4 hour drive on Friday, though mercifully the journey north this morning was very quick.

Tick!

My brane was not engaged... After crossing the A168 at Asenby I realised..Doh! Decided to cut my losses  Rainton/A61.. which was not busy. Control at Ripon garage and back up the hill. Didn't cost much time in the end.

Sure I mentioned that in the email. I nearly split the track in two to avoid that but I thought you'd work it out

I did wonder exactly how many VC167 folk there are on trikes when I saw you going t'other way as I headed north out of Ripon!

Good to see you in fine fettle .
Thanks to Deano and all his helpers for an excellent event.
(Well apart from the deflation episode just outside Ripon)

Phew, finally got around to the photies, here's Dave C and his wooden spoon prize (as well as the t shirt, there was a musette full of assorted tat - a mug, a notebook and another thing I forget):

Starters on the 50, note Flite's aforementioned fabulous Pogies in the background:

You've put an 'r' in "git" ...  (I'm sure you've had that already!)
