Title: Which Mulri-purpose compost now?
Post by: rafletcher on 20 April, 2024, 03:57:31 pm
Now we have to go peat-free, has anyone a recommendation for a multi-purpose compost that isn’t ruinously expensive but that works reasonably well? My past experience has been dire, with the top surface caking and the bulk remaining sodden.

Sylvagrow - I have used it for years and it has been very reliable.
The firm behind it was at the forefront of research into peat altenatives in the 1970s, and they are still innovating.
I use the weight of the trays or pots as an indicator of when to water.

The Dalefoot wool-based one did not work for me at all, and I find the ones containing a lot of coir difficult to manage.

Fertil Fibre came out well in the Which reports, and I use it for seed sowing, but it is expensive as you have to buy it direct and prices include delivery. But it does mean it hasn't been hanging around in a GC since last year.

Thankyou very much, I’ll investigate those.
