Title: October WARTY - a Suffolk Special - 24/10/09
Post by: Wowbagger on 31 August, 2009, 09:38:25 pm
After our triumph on Saturday not doing the Mildenhall 100 audax, the Trenchant Trio avowed that we would return to the Queen's Head in Hawkedon for lunch. So,

bikehike.co.uk - Course Creator (http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=18232)

will be our WARTY for October.

Meet at Stowmarket station for a 10 a.m. departure.

11ses in Lavenham.

Lunch at the Queen's Head, Hawkedon.

Afternoon pub stop at the Five Bells, Rattlesden.

48 miles or so. Warning: hills! The route climbs close to Suffolk's highest point (420') near Rede and the 5 miles or so either side of lunch will be hard work.

According to National Rail there are no engineering works on 24th October and tickets are currently available at £8 each way.

This will also be the last day of Summer Time until the end of March 2010. Make the most of the last light evening of the year.

Having missed this months, due to not being at Mildenhall, I'll have to do this one, in an attempt to keep my ranking somewhere near(ish) the top. ;D

Oddly enough, it's exactly the same price for tickets from London, and more than twice the price if I don't want to book my tickets ahead of time, and have to use specific trains. :-\

That's the standard cheapest advnace ticket in E. Anglia. You can get all the way to Sheringham for that price if you want (recommended).

No problem at all on the Norwich Express. Ginormous guard's van. We also carry ours around in one piece on the other trains even though we are probably not supposed to.

PS..Do I get a point for the August Warty, even though I did actually finish the "proper" ride ?  ( looked for the unmistakeable wowbagger figure on the camp site at Mildenhall, but no contact was made so I set of on my own.  ;D)

I have found audaxes to be incompatible with social rides:

"Hello everyone! - Ohh look, cake - CHOMP! - ah well, must be going - bye!"

Better to ride an audax in a 'social' fashion, I'd say.

I can ride to Lavenham in 2h or so, which would give me 1h45 in hand on arrival.  More than enough time for a bit of chat.  If I choose the next control carefully I can then ride in the same direction for a while.

Or I could just ride out for the social ride.  I've given up on points chasing for this season.  :'(

That's pretty much what I did in Chatteris.  Petrol station for food, wolf down a Ginsters thingy (c) Greenbank, back on bike, go.

Much quicker than falling asleep in an apple pie at the Green Welly.

Well, we had a jolly good time. Left Stowmarket at about 10.10 and rolled up to coffee in Lavenham, next to the Guildhall, at around midday. Even slower than usual because I was suffering with back trouble and kept needing to stretch rather than pedal. The cake was very good, we all had tea rather than coffee, I had a couple of ibuprofen and we set off at about 12.45. After Long Melford the hills began. We crossed the Poohsticks bridge and then climbed and climbed and as we climbed we sang a little song. No we didn't we just kept on pedalling.

It was just as well that the Queen's Head in Hawkedon serves food until 2.30 because it was 2.26 that we arrived. We all decided on sandwiches because the mains would have taken longer to prepare and Mrs. Wow and I were concerned about our return train, at 6.29 from Stowmarket.

We left the pub around 3.30 and almost immediately Auntie Helen had a faerie bite. That took about 15 minutes to fix and I converted my HPX to Shraeder mode. We continued climbing but we didn't quite reach the dizzy heights of 400' - I think 360ish was the limit, because we didn't follow quite the same route as in the Mildenhall ride. There were some absolutely awful road surfaces, but after we started to head east again, they seemed to improve and we had some pleasant stretches of downhill, so much that our moving average on the tandem rose form 7.8 to about 8.4 over a period of 10 miles. We arrived back at Stowmarket station at 6.04.

For 24th, I'll phone the pub to find out what they've got on, and we can book in advance. I really fancied the Venison Wellington but not enough to risk missing the train.

A nice day's ride, despite my fourth fairy visit of the week (having had only one previously in 9,000 miles - time to fit those new tyres methinks).

Much hillier than my usual ride routes. It's not that the hills were all REALLY steep, or even REALLY long, it's just that there were a lot of them. Still after the lunch stop the hills tended to fade away which was good.

Gary and I cycled home from Stowmarket (well, from just before, where the route diverged). We stopped for a cup of tea and apple crumble in Hadleigh, then had a great ride home via Stratford St Mary ad the wretched hill coming out of Dedham. The roads were pleasantly quiet for a Saturday evening - obviously Suffolk people don't go out raging much. 78 miles for the day for me, 85 for Gary who had a few miles to get to my house and back.

Thanks for your company Wow & Mrs Wow and I'm glad you caught the train OK!

Can I come along? Stowmarket being v. easy for me to get to on the train (get on, trundle along for 45 minutes, get off, find YACFers).

Last train back is at 20:32, should be finished before then though I guess?

Now these hills. How steep are they exactly? I am VERY slow uphill (and downhill, and on the flat...but mainly uphill  :))

Not very. It's still Suffolk. Rolling maybe, and that's not on some 'I live in the Alps' scale. You will not need magic powder.

This is looking promising!

Let's pull things together (in no especial order):-

Wowbagger
Mrs. Wow
Auntie Helen
Fatbloke
Alinaee

Morrisette
Mike
Jurek
TimO
RogerT

Wobbly John
Chris S
fboab
Delthebike
Bazzerp

That looks dangerously like 15 if all arrive.

Early next week I will put the menu up so that we can choose in advance. I'd like to get to the 11ses stop in Lavenham a.s.a.p after 11.40 (it's 14ish miles from Stowmarket so that would require Mrs. Wow and me to average 9 mph) and to the Queen's Head in Hawkedon by 2.15 (they stop serving at 2.30) so will be asking for orders in advance. 11ses to lunch took 1h 40m last Saturday. Lunch to Stowmarket was a little over 2 hours. There's no obvious stop on the way back, and Mrs. Wow and I really wanted to get on with it.

The hills between Long Melford and Rede are not massive in the general scheme of things, but I reckon you'd struggle to come up with a hillier 10 mile stretch in East Anglia - possibly on the Essex-Herts border chez Mike. We can climb them on the tandem so no-one should have problems.

Some of the descents are annoying because of the poor road surfaces. None of this ride is off-road but I reckon bits of it would deserve at least a few expletives on the NSTN scale.

Was out cycling with Bob & Gary from Colchester last night and it seems we have the following plan:

Bob, Gary and Helen to cycle to Stowmarket
James to get the train to Stowmarket
Bob to go on the ride with us until Long Melford at which point he heads off home (he has something he has to do late afternoon)
Helen and Gary to either get the train home or to cycle if we're feeling like doing a ton for the day.
James will get the train home

James isn't 100% sure if he's coming, but the other two are. So that makes four of us from Colchester, probably.

There was a good selection of BEER on both the occasions that we were there. Woodford's Wherry seems to be a resident. They also had St. Austell Tribute (very good indeed) and at least one other, as well as draught cider.

I didn't look at the selection of single malts (in case of snow).

http://www.nationalexpresseastanglia.com/rtti/buses_replace_trains_between_manningtree_and_harwich_town_until_further_notice (http://www.nationalexpresseastanglia.com/rtti/buses_replace_trains_between_manningtree_and_harwich_town_until_further_notice)

It's a replacement bus in the Harwich area due to a landslide, you couldn't make it up!

I don't think that will affect anyone except Moondog if he comes (and I haven't heard that he is). It doesn't affect the main London/Manningtree/Stowmarket line. But well done for spotting it!

Phew, that had my worried for a few seconds, especially since I spent my money on this some months back!

It still looks like I should pack a few extra sets of spare clothing though.

In view of the dire weather forecast at present not certain that I'll come. If so, I'd like fish pie, but please don't commit to this - I'm not sure what the arrangement with the pub is!

I gave up on trying to get rail tickets, as it required specifying which train to return on, so I'll drive to Stowmarket if I attend.

do you know where in lavenham you'll be taking tea?  I'll aim to see you there at about 11, then ride with you till lunch but not actually stop for food, just continue into the headwind and rain all the way home :D

I am pleased that i pass through your thoughts occasionally Helen.
The old bones have been a bit poorly recently.I hope to remount on Monday after a months rest.

Yes there is another landslide on the Manningtree line. The whole peninsular seems to be slipping into the North Sea.The deeper they dig the channel to allow larger vessels into Felixstowe the more i am sure it will slide.

I'm only wearing (at most) two thin layers at the moment anyway.  My waterproofs on top of a single layer with the forecast temperatures will result in the boil-in-the-bag effect.  I'm going to get wet whatever I do. :-\

Is anyone else getting the 8-30 train from Liverpool Street tomorrow morning?  I've already got my tickets, so no groupsaves involved, but just curious if anyone else is planning to be on the same train as me (or if you want to avoid me. ;D)

I assume Wow/Del will be joining this train at Chelmsford around 9-02?

Tim, I think James will be catching that train at Manningtree with his upright bike (technically Ianrauk's upright bike). He's not got the train before with a bike so hopefully it will all go OK.

Tim,
I have tickets to collect for the 08:30 train, so I'll most likely be on the concourse not too long after eight.

Sadly circumstances conspired against me on this one.  Mrs T and I took her 6 months pregnant Sister to the theatre in London yesterday.  Just before curtain up she complained of pains at the back of her chest and as the performance continued it became obvious that all was not well.  To cut a long story short we ended up spending a large chunk of Friday night in the A & E dept of St Thomas's hospital in london while tests where carried out.

Turns out that she had managed to crack a rib through coughing !! and we where eventually allowed to take her home. ( VERY gingerly )

This is the 2nd time she has not been well when we have taken her to a London show...we may not be taking her again  ;)

Spent most of today trying to catch up on lost sleep etc.

91 miles of soggy-in-Suffolk punctuated by chit-chat, BEER and a small but perfectly formed cooked bird, in excellent company.

What could be finer...

Thanks Wow.

For a grey day with airborne mizzle a-plenty, that was a fine day out.

Thanks, Wow for organizing.

Thanks, all the others in whose company it was a pleasure to ride.

It's surprising how much it's possible to enjoy a grott day  :)

It was very fine. That is a gem of a pub and demands to be visited on a hot summer's day when we will be able to sit out the back consuming ales whilst enjoying the view across the wheaten valley below.

The company was, as ever, first rate.

The weather was of the sort that, if you were sitting at home thinking about a casual ride, you'd look out the window and think "Bugger! It's raining!" and you wouldn't go. In fact, when you were in it there was hardly a cause to don a waterproof. We had a few minutes' sunshine during th home straight.

And... we have now broken a third Rohloff hub.

Great ride - despite the on/off drizzle.

209km in all for me - including the rides to/from Stowmarket.

I had the full audax uniform with me today including sandals (no socks, natch), a bit of a beard, and a fixed gear.

Brilliant lunch stop, supremely organised - thanks Wowbagger for arranging. Cracking cakes courtesy of fboab; thanks again - and for the guidance through the lanes between Stanton/Barningham and Stowmarket.

The drizzle turned the lanes in flint soup, and the faeries were busy. One to me and multiples to others I think; but no matter. Except that I put my wheel back on the other way round and had a longer gear to push up those hills. That middle section of the ride really was quite hilly.

A lesson I have learned today: It's possible to wear sandals in October and not have cold feet all day.

Just got in having done 103 miles in total.

Quite a tough ride back with the strong headwind, but really enjoyed the day overall.

Another puncture at Hawkedon for Auntie Helen wasn't brill, neither was Uncle James also getting a puncture, but I am sure my comedy pump added some interest to the lunchtime break.

As others have said, a surprisngly enjoyable WARTY, the forecast very heavy rain thankfully never materialised, but seemed to be averaged out to a longer period of drizzle.  I think this spurred people on after lunch and a somewhat more rapid group led the way, never stopping to let people reform.  Apologies to those who got left at the back. :(

I'm still disappointed that we didn't get to see Jurek's pumping technique of which some comment was made.

The midmorning break was very welcome, and luckily, I managed to get the very last slice of cake, and a pot of tea which was very welcome.

The route as cycled is here (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/October-2009-WARTY361528) on Bikely.

I did just over 70 miles, which was enough in that sort of weather, and got home just after 9, which likewise was a long enough day, and I was grateful when my head hit the bed.

Yes, that was a good ride. Hardly any rain, more like Welsh drizzle - nothing like the forecast (why am I surprised??). Think I will take Mr M to that pub.

Thanks for organising Wow!
