Title: Could we have a frost fair?
Post by: Adrian on 28 October, 2009, 10:46:34 pm
Apologies in advance to anyone who is not Londoncentric

If we had a decent cold spell and held the Thames relatively still by deploying the barrier, would it freeze over?

If so what would be my chances of getting the straw headed one interested in the idea?

He'd want to paint it blue.  Then let motorbikes use it. :P

It would never be allowed on health and safety grounds.

The Club Captain of Newbury RC hadn't missed a Sunday run in 60 years, and he told the tale of the club riding to Devizes down the Kennet & Avon canal in the winter of 62-63.  He didn't mean the towpath, either :)

You wouldn't be able to ride on the Thames anyway.  All the frozen turds would make it too bumpy.

In all seriousness the deploying the barrier for long enough to allow the thames to freeze would probably result in fluvial (river not tidal) flooding unless it was also a very dry period as the lower thames would be unable to drain.

but I will ask at work if the barrier team have considered it!!

Nope.

AIUI when the last frost fairs were held, the river didn't have the embankments it has today, and so was much wider, shallower, and thus  lacking  the strong currents which, in part, prevent it from freezing today.

Didn't you go to the Frost Fair (http://www.viewlondon.co.uk/whatson/frost-fair-london-feature-1508.html) last year?  It was very good.

Unfortunately, its not happening this year - but you can't blame the Straw Headed One... as it's a Southwark Council thing.  ;)
