Post by: Wobbly on 21 January, 2015, 04:53:52 am
Steve's currently munching his way through the breakfast of champions* and should be on the road shortly.

Weather's a bit damp but not as bad as forecast.

Good stuff! - Great start so far.

I take it there aren't many leftovers in the Wobbly homestead today.

Just saw the tracker fire up.
Wish him all the best for another chilly day out there.

Well, the 48 pack of Weetabix remains unopened. Steve clearly wasn't trying.

It's a balmy 3 Centigrade out there (no idea what that is in those funny, foreign units) which Steve commented felt "warm" as we set off.

Good one, Wobbly!  A Stevebot rebooted, refuelled, and on the road. :)

Hoping for no ice today.

Wonder if the eating habits of UK Audaxers will be going through a transformation over the coming year?

Forecast seems to have picked up a bit over night, thank goodness and looking pretty reasonable over the next few days. Good work Wobbly and keep safe TG.

Just come in to work from my lofty heights near the top of the hill in Sheffield which was pretty bad but down on the lower ground in the city centre the snow is barely sticking on the roads. As long as Steve stays low down, he probably won't run to any difficulties.

You know, I think in 20 years time they will tell stories about the Abraham Groove in the road between Gretton and Tewksbury.

I've just lookked at the trackers for the other two:  Pruett's estimate fo today is 300+ miles, which at c 30mph (in the Ian Cammish class) I can just about believe, but Searvogel's is over 2000 miles, which at 11mph, I can't believe.  Has he (or both) left it switched on while they fly?  There are some very long straight lines on the tracks!

Good work Wobbly
I'll be acting as Steve's carer at his place in MK from tonight through to Sat morning.

Food for tonight is prepared (edit - with more than a little help from Mrs SH):
Brocolli & stilton soup
Oxtail stew with pasta and greens (the Jamie Oliver recipe describes it as "Insanely good oxtail stew", serves 8-10. Should be enough for Friday too I hope and certainly tastes good to me).
Apple crumble and custard.

Two packs of sausages at the ready for breakfast and pocket food. Sounds like more will be required.

Will be heading off to MK this afternoon. I don't plan to cycle with Steve but will be taking running kit to explore the nearby Grand Union canal towpath.

So hopefully the TG machine will be well fuelled and catered for over the next few days.

It is good information to know what host's are giving Steve for meals.
Has he given any hints on anything that he is missing/craving which could be picked up by following hosts?
I will be hosting Steve on Saturday and am currently planning a chicken pasta bake with fresh veg.
Not sure about sweet yet, he may be crumbled out!
Usual stuff available for breakfast and pocket food.

Sounds like you have it well planned SH. If you need any Weetabix I have 48 here still.

I asked Steve a few times if he wanted anything else but he said no.

During his stay he didn't eat anything sweet (not even sugar in his tea which surprised me)

If my knowledge of MK is correct, the shortest route from Steve's flat to the Grand Union Canal should take you past the concrete cows. Something to look forward to.

Settling in at chez TG.

Dry and mild compared to recent temps in MK. Guess it will be 2-3 hours before he arrives. Time for a mug of tea and keep an eye on the tracker.

Without doubt.

I may have missed it, but has TG said anything about the after affects of the weekends excursions? Obviously Monday was a shorter day, but with the last two days hitting the January target, I'm assuming he wasn't too badly run down by those longer days?

Steve's been well fed and tea'd and now getting some ZZZZZ.

He seems in good form and showing no ill effects from what must have been a tough weekend. Says it will help to get him fitter and the slightly shorter day afterwards helped recovery.

Today's ride was a good one apparently and someone joined him on the road of a while - he really appreciates this as well as support from the roadside. One thorn in a tyre which he removed without loss of pressure - the tubeless tyre must have sealed if thorn had fully penetrated

I've replaced the chain and done the usual battery charging. He should be good to go again tomorrow. Not sure of the planned route at present but will ask before he sets off.

I just wish I was in the correct country to go ride with Steve. A think a steady rolling tandem would suit his riding style. At this rate, I can see by the time the french festivities are done I'll be seriously considering taking a month or two unpaid leave just to be nearer the action.

How much did you feed him?

Mug of tea and 2 thick slices of malt loaf on arrival
2 servings of broccoli & stilton soup
2 servings of oxtail stew, pasta and broccoli

Must have been 10:30 pm by then and he was feeling sleepy so the pudding was served for breakfast on 22nd.

Think he said he's lost ~5kg since 1st Jan but had planned on losing weight/getting fitter during first months. He expects appetite to build up as he rides further/longer over the coming months.

Post by: Frank9755 on 22 January, 2015, 10:14:02 am
5kg is basically a stone. That's a lot to lose in 3 weeks. Serious point, he might need to find ways to take on more calories.

Finishline wet lube.
Steve's done all his mileage on 1 bike so far. 1st chain was replaced at 2016, 2nd (yesterday) at 3900.

Steve still looks "well padded" (and in his Jan 1st TV appearance also) but that's becasue he *is* well padded. I've never seen anyone wearing so many layers.

Title: Re: Jan 21st
Post by: swiss hat on 22 January, 2015, 02:14:19 pm
The "well padded" is partly due to the multiple layers - probably 5-6 layers of base/jersey/thermal yesterday but he's also carrying inbuilt thermal insulation at the moment. He commented on this when I was scrubbing his back in the bath last night (joking!). He's burning some of that insulation off and aiming to be lighter/fitter over the coming weeks.

No need to be concerned with excessive weight loss in my opinion. He knows how his body works.

He says the low HR during rides is because of riding to how his legs feel rather than focusing on a specific HR zone tho' this is shown on the Garmin.
