Stevenage Start of Summertime Special 200 -- MIA?!
« on: 14 January, 2017, 08:48:47 pm »
Does anyone know whether SSOSS is running this year?  I can't find it in the calendar.

It would be a great loss to lose such a popular and long-running institution!
Lockdown lethargy. RRTY: wot's that? Can't remember if I'm on #8 or #9 ...

It's not in the planner either.  I guess it's missed the deadline for March anyway.

Sadly correct, missed the cut...

Being date dependant, it remains to be seen if an alternative later event will be offered up.
I'd offer you some moral support - but I have questionable morals.

It was mentioned as March 26th in the rides list (which runs till end of Feb) sent before Christmas. No update on the event page on Stevenage CTC website and no request for volunteers yet.

Looks like it's running on Sunday 26 March, but not as an AUK event.

I wonder if the number of AUKs riding will drop this year, now that it doesn't 'count' for e.g. RRTY.

I guess some will DIY it but, yes, it'll be interesting to see how big a drop in numbers there will be (although the number of finishers may not be accurately recorded).

I wonder if it was accidental or intentional that they're not running at as an Audax UK validated event — I can imagine if most riders are non-audaxers that the organisers felt it pointless paying for brevets and all the validation fees.  For such a popular event that would add up to several hundred pounds saved.

The Gridiron ride seems to do quite nicely without AUK validation, though I think it was in the AUK calendar a fair while ago. Helly probably knows, among others.

Accidental, I think. It's a new organiser this year, and I believe that the request to register with AUK was somewhat later than the deadline ...

My very first audax was the 62km event in 2007 (and I drove almost 100 miles to get there!) so I was hoping to ride the 200 to commemorate my 10 years of audaxing this spring.

I'm sad to see it's not running as a 'proper' event, but I'm sure I'll find another way to celebrate

If its not an AUK event is it ok to ride AND also claim it as a DIY?

My Gridiron experience is very outdated. It was not an AUK event when I did it and I don't think it was in the AUK Calendar. I think it was listed as a DATC event.

No idea of the current situation.

I'm tempted to ride it as a DIY this Feb for my RRTY. There's 3 of us for my diary marker at the moment. I'm not around for the 26th March.

Here's the event page is you fancy riding on 26th March

well your local Man (otea) will confirm but it seems to meet all the self sufficiency criteria so I don't see why not.

Oh, it's a very proper event. Just not (this year) an AUK-registered one.

The 100km works quite well as a DIY 200 from London, though somehown the route up always seems to involve passing through Essendon, which is distinctly Not Flat.

The road to Henham from Suckstead Green is worse than ever regarding pot holes and mud. Better to continue on down the B road and take the next right to Henham. I did tell the organisers so they may have rerouted this year anyway.

Not according to the route sheet, although there's a warning about the surface.

Well take care on the last descent before the rise to the scaffolding tower. Right hand side of mud is best side of road to be on.
