I used to jog (about 15 years ago) but it made my knees ache afterwards.

Whenever I watch the London Marathon on TV I'm always amazed at the number of people wearing knee supports/bandages.

Most of these seem to be on the 'heavy' side.

I am on the 'heavy' side as well and I value my knees so I won't bother running again.

I also find it very boring.  I can get out into the 'wilderness' on a bike for an hour but would struggle to get out of suburbia by running.

On the other hand ...
In this weather it takes me 15 minutes to get out of the door on my bike. So even an hour's ride seems almost too short. Running is a lot simpler, so a 20min session round town is worthwhile (sort of).

Physios ban *everyone* from running.

Unless they sell you the expensive gait/body/foot/shoe/etc analysis with appropriate running shoe recommendation and suggested training routine package.

I also find it very boring.  I can get out into the 'wilderness' on a bike for an hour but would struggle to get out of suburbia by running.

It took me about 8 sessions (20 to 30 minutes each) of running on the treadmill before I got used to it enough that I could zone out and not think about how excruciatingly dull it was. This is in a windowless gym in the basement of our office building with the only distractions available being an mp3 player and a laminated "WIPE DOWN MACHINE AFTER USE" sign on the wall in right front of me. *thump* *thump* *thump*

My plan is to build up to running to/from work (~10km) a few times a week. At the weekend I'll cycle the hackbike down to Richmond Park, lock it up at the gates, run one 10km lap and cycle home.

Luckily I got the Rejected magazine from this year's London Marathon public ballot entry so I'm in no rush.

UPDATE:  (as posted elsewhere)

I did the run today, in 2 hours 45 minutes and it was OK. I wouldn't call it fun, but it was OK. Some very nice people had waited in the town centre to cheer me home.

Since my original post, I ran about five times on a treadmill and did one 6 mile jog up and down the canal towpath. I've also managed to increase my weight by a stone since Christmas, so I ran today at about 16 st. 5 lbs. <Insert profanity of choice>

Well done!  Nicely pulled out of thin air!
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

That is a phenomenal achievment Gordy. Having done one and only one half marathon in my life and thinking about the training I put in I can't believe you could do that so casually. Well done.

Thank you, thank you.

My "speed" was 4.7 mph, and my calf muscles have seized. I can barely walk.

Ow, Ow, Ow...

Blimey, what an achievement.  Well done you.

Might I suggest a treat of a sports massage at some stage very soon.  Keep moving and little stretches if at all possible.

Treat yourself.

Well done Gordy!

In a previous life, I used to run (competetively).

I think it'd kill me to try it now.

Hats off! To ye!

Physios ban *everyone* from running.

My physio will be running her first marathon in April.

Well done Gordy!

Not sure I'd recommend your training strategy to anyone else though. :)

That's brilliant!

It's along time since I last did a 1/2 Marathon. Probably not yet long enough!
It is simpler than it looks.

Thank you for the comments. The outcome from yesterday's run is that I couldn't sleep due to pain; I've had to drive to work and I stagger round my classroom holding onto desks and things. If I had a zimmer, I'd use it. My left calf is borked completely. At least my cycling means that my heart and lungs are strong, even if my legs need some different muscles fitted.

What next? Run next year's half marathon with a BMI of 25 or less and 100 miles of training done. I might enjoy it then.

PS: I heard in the local news that one guy died as soon as he crossed the finishing line yesterday. Awful.

"Sir, why are you hobbling around the classroom like a cripple?"

OK, now, be honest. What have you told them? ;D
