Sleeping bag: Left or right side zip?
« on: 31 October, 2008, 11:00:34 pm »
I've just ordered a bivi bag and now I'm going to get myself a snugpak sleeper extreme for some autumn camping.

Anyway, the question I'm wondering about is which side the zipper should be in. I'm right handed, so which side should the zip be in? Or has it got more to do with which side I sleep on?  ??? ???

I thought that it was more to do with getting a matching pair, should you wish to zip two together.

alas, i only have an imaginary girlfriend, so won't need to zip bags together  :'(

anyway, found out on some site that right handed people need left side zips, and vice versa, apparently :)

Either will do. You soon get used to it.

As for girlfriends, you never know. Sometimes it's necessary to share body warmth in a survival situation.

The Mrs is left handed, and has a left handed sleeping bag.  Its down to personal preference rather than any predisposition over anything else.

What about this...

Selk Bags - Gadget & Gift Shop - GenieGadgets

I have one, and it's great.

Left, right, middle....up to you.  And no restrictions for leg movement.

I'd prefer my sleeping bag to have it's zip on the left as I sleep on the right. It doesn't, it's not a major problem, but I wish I'd thought of it when divvying up the contents of the house.

Cheers for the advice :)

Next question is of course: Where to cycle in November and do some camping with the sleeping bag and an army bivi bag and a poncho/tarp shelter? Scotland will probably be too cold...Maybe France?

If you're right handed, go for a left sided zip.  It makes it far easier to get in and out of the bag, particularly when you wake at 3.00 a.m. with a very full bladder.

I prefer the zip in the middle

Sit up and push out with your hands and the bag opens for you

Be aware that most French campsites are closed by the end of September.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I lie on my right side to read!

Hence I need the zip on this side to allow book access

Snugpak's are great - I have a Kilo and now a Winter. Right hand zips - I got that so I could zip to Corvine's but only did that once! But I've got used to it now, and decided to have both the same - avoid confusion in the middle of the night.

And yeah, the Selk bag looks brilliant. It made me think of the shoes you bought, Noodley - the ones with toes. How did you get on with them?

The winter Snugpak is ace, I have one of those.  I need a lighter, smaller-packing bag for summer use as it's too big and hot.  Anyhoo, the zip placement... is largely irrelevant as I'm always a tangled mess of mess by the time I wake.

If the zombies come while I'm abed, I'm screwed.

Selk bag plus one ! You can wear it round the house and not bother with heating at all - well below zero.  Extraordinary garment.  Also means you can sleep anywhere you like - on sofa, in bed, on floor - whenever you feel the need.

Would flossing be more convenient?

You can't floss zombies.

I dunno.  I reckon you could take their heads off with a garrotte fashioned from floss.  I've cut myself with it before.

Shoes with toes? What madness is this?  ;D

Ta-dah!
http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/

I showed them to Corvine, and told them that Noodley has these, and the selk bag. He asked if he also shops in Ann Summers for those pants with the extra... bit.

LOL, and they even do socks with toes to go in your shoes with toes.  All we need now is a SPD version. ;D
Actually, it is rocket science.

I just got a pair.

It'll be harder to fit cleats to these than to Charlotte's fetish boots!  The sole is just a tread of hard sticky rubber.

They had a stand at the Outdoor Show selling the Five fingers, and folk wandering about promoting them.  Superstoker thought they just looked weird (though he didn't notice the black pair the woman was wearing, walking next to the guy with the multi-coloured ones).

They seemed to be doing a good trade...
