Mini cows?
« on: 24 June, 2009, 11:31:23 am »
One of those terribly intellectual discussions last night that you only have when wine has been involved. You can get pygmy goats, and tiny shetland ponies, and some breeds of pigs are tiny, but can you get mini cows? ???
Have you seen my blog? It has words. And pictures! http://ablogofallthingskathy.blogspot.com/

Yes, I've seen them in Wales / on Exmoor etc
They are more like "compact" cows but are half the size of Freisans and slightly woolly

Dexters seem to be the popular answer for small cows.

Quote
What does the breed look like?

The Dexter breed is the smallest British breed of cattle. It is a dual-purpose breed, with the average weight of a cow being some 300 - 350 Kg's and standing 92cm - 107cm at the shoulder. There are two recognized types, short legged and non-short, both of which have their equal merits.

The breed comes in three colours, predominately black, but also red and dun.

Dexters are grumpy little bastards, always seemed to be much more aggressive than proper cows.

A short stout woman of my acquaintance had the nickname 'Dexter', but didn't know why.

I find them rather sinister.

The Corporation of London keep Sussex Cattle on bits of their land, Farthing Down, Riddlesdown, to keep the scrub at bay. They are fairy small by cow standards.

Short man syndrome for cows?

As a bit of a cow anorak (I lectured about cows for many years) I can also reveal that, alongside the Dexter, there are, especially in the US, cattle, especially Herefords, with a dwarfing gene.
