Snow!
« on: 29 December, 2009, 03:28:51 pm »
Well frozen snow. The roads were covered with a layer of semifrozen slush. The rest of the snow was crisp and porrige like, with frozen compacted ruts. Think of riding over rutted hard mud, just as slippery as a very slippy thing. Through porrige.

And more snow. I went out to Auchterhouse, to follow the old railway line out over Pitknappie Moss. After jumping a gate, the path stretched ahead of me something like this:

That looks deep and crisp and even. It is. Deep enough to require pushing..

The old railway embankment appears to be in good shape with a wide and easily rideable (in summer) path. Lots of animal tracks, some footprints and only one set of tyre tracks.

And looking back

Eventually I came to a style and decided that half a mile of pushing the bike was enough.

The line does continue the other side. I jumped a gate (again) and waded across the field. It was the ominous creaking of breaking ice underfoot that reminded me it was once a bog before the railway drained the land.

Back to the road and a last look at the snow before riding home.

Not brave enough to get the bike out. Well, can't be arsed, really . . .

Here's our road today

This snow stuck to everything

The house next door, taken at about 9 am today.

Our yard, showing Volio MTB tracks from yesterday.  There's about 100 m more of that through the gate before you reach the road.

In weather like this I'm positively GLAD that all the (food) shops one could need are nearer to our house than your neighbour's is to yours, MV!

We've had more snow in the last couple of days - no photos to prove it at the moment, though.

The grass in our front garden has been invisible for 6 weeks now.  I'm beginning to think we're in Northern Canada, not Northern Scotland.

The gently scattering we had round here on Friday evening led to some interesting effects

Half term's when the traffic becomes mysteriously less bad for a week.

I've getting an attack of Raynaud's from just looking at those.
