400 DIY route ok, waiting for weather
« on: 30 July, 2008, 05:09:26 pm »
I've had my controls approved for a DIY 400

But now the weather has shifted from permanent heat to permanent rain

Also I still haven't got my hub dynamo light working again

Is this the start of an epic poem?

How'd you manage that?

I'd offer to join you on the ride but, a) I have a trip to Scotland and, b) I might bring further bad luck.

Ok I went to do the DIY 400 on tuesday, as this seemed the best bet for weather this week

How wrong I was

The short story is that I made it round 442k but unfortunately took about 30 hours doing it so it's no good to get validated :(

High points

1) My rebuilt from scrap and spares light was literally brilliant and worked flawlessly despite the high levels of wetness.  Inoled optics rule.
2) I saw a badger in Chippenham
3) There is a 24 hour coffee shop in Chippenham.  Cappuchino at 4am, hmm hmm
4) The Garden Cafe in Frome does a nice flan
5) My socks were dry at least 50% of the time during daylight hours
6) Slept in a bus shelter, phone box and a church porch.  Yes I know it was only a 400 but I think the sore throat drained out more energy than usual
7) Ginsters Steak pastys sound like a horrible thing to eat.  However, in this case for some reason this was the breakfast of champions from Frome 24 hour garage.
8) Bristol / Bath cycle path was loverly
9) Navigation in Bristol went well this time.
10) Nice man in Sopworth at midnight with a torch saw me reading a map and asked if I was ok

Minus ponts
1) Sore throat
2) It rained pretty much all night
3) Route not clear at Wickwar (middle of bloody nowhere) and found I didn't have that bit of map.
4) Campag repeatedly malfunctioned so that the gears jumped except when using the 26 sprocket.
5) Navigation in Frome and Bridgwater need sorting out :)
6) I missed the sunset on the Severn Bridge again

Does this mean it's a 400K Permanent ?

Shame. What was the validated distance? 442km/14.3kph = 30h54m54s

Does Wickwar mean you went to see the Somerset Monument at Hawkesbury Upton?

Ginsters Steak Pasties rock (only on Audaxes) along with the Peppered Steak slices. Inedible at any other time. And pasties have to be sourced from The Chough in Padstow.

Even if it's not validated for 442, stick it in anyway. The validator may employ a few 'rounding errors'

The validated distance was 410km which is 27h20m

The actual distance taking into account my computers over keenness is probably about 425km

The actual time was before 8am until after 1pm the following day or over 29 hours.

I stopped controlling at Bridgwater when I realised I wasn't going to make it.  I had a full english breakfast instead

Ah well, silver linings and all that!

Good effort nonetheless.

I went to Hawkesbury Upton but I didn't notice a monument.  I must go there on a sunny day sometime :)

Well (almost) done Mr V.

That must be the sound of a recumbent rider dragging his knuckles on the ground - they can do that whilst riding, apparently.  ;)
