Morocco advice

Hi

Anyone with experience of Morocco? We're thinking of riding from Marrakech to the ferry ports for Algeciras or Gibraltar. Have you ridden any of that route? We'd be interested in news of road conditions, accommodation, the best route to take. Not a pedal-by-pedal account but an idea of how feasible it is.

Please do help if you can.

Many thanks.

Went on an organised trip in Morocco a few years back.   Lots of the roads have a strip of tarmac down the middle with a dirt shoulder each side.   Vehicles approach each other on the strip then drop their right wheels off onto the dirt shoulder and pass, then get back on the strip.

Drivers were friendly but quite reckless.

In the villages children run up to you often shouting 'stilo, stilo' or similar.   The advice we were given was not to stop and give gifts to individuals but to give to local schools if you wish to give.   Also, we were advised not to give money except in return for help or taking their picture.

Two potential hazards:   The children often throw stones if their begging goes unfulfilled, and, wild dogs seem to like a piece of touring cyclist.

Haven't cycled there, but have been there 3 times. If it was me doing it I'd be looking to start and finish in Marrakesh and do loop south over the Atlas mountains (not that hard) and down the draa valley, looping back east and taking in Todra Gorge the area around Skoura and most importantly the dunes at Merzouga

IME the people south of Marrakesh are much more laid back than the Northerners and the scenery is amazing.

Don't ride at dusk or night time, and if your visit falls during Ramadan then think carefully about a different time

Thinking of a short tour of the Atlas mountains this year. Probably 5 days arrive-depart so 4 days cycling.
A few questions:

Suggested must-see places? Don't think we'll get as far as Merzouga in the time. Ourigane? Toubkai National Park looks like one road in then turn round - worth doing?

What are the roads like for touring tyres 28-32?

Two potential hazards:   The children often throw stones if their begging goes unfulfilled, and, wild dogs seem to like a piece of touring cyclist.

Is a rabies jab needed?

I normally travel light and don't book ahead. Is this feasible/reckless in that part of the world? Esp. given that the mate who wants to go with has not cycle-toured before & may not take kindly to stuff going wrong.

Best time of year to go?

TIA
