From what I recall reading in the specialist beekeeping press (not the sensationalist daily rags) It was a really bad summer in Greece as far as bees were concerned. Very hot and with numerous forest fires.
But you really should be buying locally produced
British Honey though, none of this foreign stuff especially any from China which is packed full of antibiotics and other random chemicals. Not that I have any honey for sale - my stocks are now down to a dozen or so jars and I lost a hive last week. Those British beekeepers that do have any stock are rationing supplies as they drastically eat into reserves built up in good years. One I know who usually has 1000lb in reserve at this time of year and last year had 700lb is now down to less than 100lb.
Two bad years in a row, sometimes with only 15lb per hive rather than 100lb or more is nigh on a disaster. But this could be a really good year for bees, but we were saying that this time last year, and the same time the year before.
If anything the cold weather these past couple of months
has been useful, but anything less than a perfect spring and summer could be the final straw for many beekeepers.
