Got an amazing amount of space from drivers tonight.
« on: 09 November, 2009, 07:02:06 pm »
Really unbelievable.

Following on from the "blinded a driver" thread, I have now angled my light down at the road. At the same time, I've angled it sidways so it lights a patch of road about 2-3 ft behind me, and about 2ft out into the road.

The result was simply stunning. I have never been give so much road space before. It may have been compounded by the misty conditions - but there was a definate wtf reaction.

Only downside is that the red patch is also visible to drivers coming in the opposite direction, although it is by far outshone by my front light. I've uploaded a video to demonstrate. (sorry for the poor quality)

What's the opinion on the potential pitfall of the red patch visible from the front?

That is a good idea.

its about perception and most people will respond by allowing more space.

What is the light u are using?

Interesting.  How did you manage to mount it to get it pointing downwards in that way?

I have a piece of black plastic conduit fixed horizontally to the back of the rack, and the bracket fixes to that. It can rotate around the conduit to point down, but the bracket can also rotate around the tightening screw, to point sideways.

I'm sure you could do the same if it is mounted on a seat tube - but reverse the rotations. (Around seat tube to point sideways, and around the tightening screw to point down)

Looks like I may be wrong about the effectiveness of ground-projection lights -- though the BLT isn't a light, it's a light. [1]

Have just fitted an old Cateye to the nearside of my trailer, I'll try pointing that down and report back.

This is the way Dinotte recommend their rear lights should be used.
I think it's a very sound idea.

As for visibility from the front, the more drivers think WTF, the more they're thinking.

Recently i tried switching my main light frmo flash to "on" i think that less cars pulled out in front of me. I have the idea that a flashing light = bike = slow, so cars think they have room to pull out.
Whereas a solid bright light = scooter? = wait a bit to see...

It's part of teh reason I refuse to wear HiViz. It's because I don't want to be lumped in with the herd and treated equally(badly) thank you very much.

I'd agree regarding rear Dinotte's.  I've followed a few where they have been angled down, and they make an amazing red area on the road.

Excellent - I'll be really interested to see if you get a similar result.

From this  morning, I've noticed the effect is much less in twilight (as you'd expect). But got very similar results this evening - dark but less misty than yesterday.

I think one of the things that I find most surprising, is cars are MUCH more hesitant to pass me. They tend to slow down and follow for much further than they normally would. Or perhaps drivers have become more timid the last couple of nights  :D

It can't be because I am dazzling them, because the dazzle effect is much less this way, than with the light pointed back (and slightly up) as it has been previously. I think it is because the red patch buggers up their perception of the width of the bike, making it feel much wider.

I  think there may also be an effect when they are far back, and can only see my lights, and the patch on the road - they can't work out what I am, so have to slow down. Once slowed, there is less of a need to pass quickly.

I feel safer with lights than I do in daylight sometimes.

Tony, what's the effect change between lit up urban areas and darker areas?

It has less of an effect in lit up urban areas, but is still significant.

For example - in the lit up stretch, going out of Congleton on the A34 there are 3 or 4 minor pinch points. To be honest it is probably safe for motorists to pass, even going through these points, and they normally do. The last 3 nights, I don't think one car has passed me through them.

I have had cars pass "as close as before" when they have been squeezed by traffic coming in the opposite direction - but they seem to be slowing down first to figure things out.

It's like I've claimed, and painted a section of road red, and shouted.....

"YOU SHALL NOT PASS"

And the drivers just say "Oh - OK Then"

(Hope I'm not over hyping it  :D )
