.... today, when this went off.

It would appear that the split occurred *exactly* where the join of the rim is pinned.
Coincidence?
Hmmmm....

I bought a replacement rim in April or May as things were starting to look a little thin in the braking surface department, with the intention of getting Arup Sen to do a rim swap.
Then I got ideas in my head about seeing how many more miles I could eke out of the rim.
Today that became apparent......

It's gotta go somewhere, so it'll go at the weakest point: not a surprise.  It's just a surprise for anyone to risk riding such a worn out rim!

I know.
It's really tight (reckless?) of me, isn't it?
Having got away with it twice, I don't think I'll be pushing my luck again.
Nor will I be shoving maximum psi into a worn rim again.
That could've ended much worse than it did.
In other news:
I'm about to go out, in the next few minutes, to pick up the re-built wheel from Arup .

Isn't it supposed to have a strip around the side that gets wound off with a key or is that luncheon meat?

For those who are interested....
I collected the wheel with a replacement rim from Arup Sen last night.
The braking surface of the new rim has 1.29mm of material thickness.
The one which went BAAAANG!!! was worn, down to 0.69mm of material - so just over half of what it started out with, and I was running it at a max PSI of 120.

I think I'll be exercising a little more caution, and a little less (fewer? pdnts?) PSI in future.

Less is correct.

PSI's are countable, though, aren't they? I'd have gone with fewer.

  • Just do it!
Less/lower pressure, fewer psi IMHO.

Oh dear, I'm going to have to justify my pedantry  :-[
