I see it makes the climbing substantially more than that advertised - which was also true for the Garmin itself.
It was probably the same amount of climbing for everyone. Unless you were on fixed  :D

Hehe. Well - I probably rode a bit further than others, from tacking up some climbs. Oh - and I overshot the control at Bwlch and so had a bonus climb there to backtrack to the hall. Not enough to make that much difference - but I don't think the altimeters are that accurate TBH.

another 400
Express courier an entry to el supremo for the Hailsham 400k?
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

Well I'll admit to at least a couple of hundred metres less climbing than most on the fixed but that's because I was pushing it  :-[

Anyone else notice that the distance to Bwlch on the routesheet was about 20k further than it should have been? (Didn't worry me as I was relying on the GPS).

Yes, noticed the Bwlch discrepancy which prompted a brief discussion at Llandovery, but the Brevet card and the GPS concurred.

I realised as I was on the way there that the GPX had the waypoint wrong.  I overshot last year, in the rain.

I keep noticing these small errors in the GPX, and keep forgetting to fix them for next year.

I try and redo each route from scratch each time, that way I only have new errors to worry about, rather than existing ones plus new ones.

A superb day out with the Faccombe 4 (or 3, I'll let Urban_Biker describe his "one of those days" days).

Well - a very strange ride for me - mostly riding on my own. Physically I felt OK but just seemed unable to keep up with you. Plodded fine to the end but would struggle to say I really enjoyed any part of the ride. (which is absolutely more to do with my mental state than the ride itself).

I need to get my head sorted out if I'm going to continue to PBP. I'm having too many of "those days" right now. Lack of fitness is an aspect but its not the whole problem I think.

All in all a good ride. A bit hot and windy in places, but pretty good for Wales.
Still a personal best for 400K (although some of the credit might go to other riders pace setting on the 1st and 6th sections).

I was a bit confused by the 1st info. I thought the brevet card said at the T junction near Builth, which I understood to be  this one:
Google Maps
which says 12 miles.  But most other riders seamed to think it was this junction:
Google Maps
which says 6 miles.

That was the one specified on the routesheet, as I realised when I checked on arriving at the second junction. I was fortunate that a kind soul saved me from the chore of retracing.

Interesting. I certainly went with the no-thought "it must be where the control used to be" and put 12.

You got round one of the most mentally demanding rides on the calendar so there can't be that much wrong with it.  We don't don't it because it's easy..

Just got home. That was my 22nd participation, but only 21st completion of the Brevet Cymru. Apparently it was a subject of discussion at The Mariners Café during the preceding week as to whether I'd be there again. "You're a bit late this year" was how I was greeted when I arrived. For Carol, who has worked there for 31 years (she started straight from school and has survived all changes of management since) it was the 21st year she has served BC participants.

I had my meal there chatting to Adrian, daimountaingoat's dad. We rode the BC together in 1996. When I stopped at the bus shelter before the turn to Usk he pressed on feeling fine, but had to stop to sleep not much further on ( sound familiar, Paul D?).

I rode much of the way back with, amongst others, LEL inaugural Steve Ralphs. We spent much time reminiscing about the time before AUK went soft.

I did feel sorry for NikW, descending the Sugar Loaf with a raging tailwind, his legs all a-blur, and both brakes on, as I freewheeled past him towards Llandovery. "You only pedal when you feel like it" had been Manotea's comment on the Heart of England, and he's quite right.

I was staying with Nik who recalled the original event which started and finished in Cardiff: out to Merthyr then across to Fishguard and straight back to the finish.

It's Nik we have to thank for the current route which was used for the first time in 1990 (with only a few tweaks since then). In 1989 the turn was at Carmarthen.

I love it.  It vies with the Irish Mail for position as my favourite 400.  Though I’ve only done 3 400s (7A being t’other).

Good write-up great one.

Cakes at Bwlch ???? When I left there were 200 servings of veg soup & rolls, 140 portions of apple pie & custard, and as much tea, coffee, fruit juice as cyclists could drink.

Don't tell me the helpers ate the lot, and then had to go out and get you all cakes

The apple pie with caramel topping was very nice. I'll come again...

The Apple Pie was bloody lovely!

I commented to the lady serving that it was much nicer than a shop-bought one.

She replied "Mark bought it" so I guess it's nicer than other shop-bought ones.
