WTWTA's not among my favourite children's books, but he was a very creative and talented man.

That book terrified me when I was very little and my mother read it to me. Apparently I was afraid the Wild Things would walk out of the pictures and into my room while I was asleep. I made my mum shut the book up in a drawer so they couldn't escape, and later she gave it away. Testament to the power of the illustrations and story. But now I love it and so did my son when he saw it. I guess there's a bit of Max in him! Shame about that awful film they made with the same title. Au revoir, Maurice.

I did not see his books as a child, but my own got through several copies of The Wild Things and In The Night Kitchen. The illustrations are fantastic and the kids loved them, but I often thought the words didn't quite flow well. Was quite surprised the Night Kitchen was censored from time to time, not sure what goes through these people's heads.
