Budget Sleeping Bag
« on: 13 August, 2013, 04:45:03 pm »
I've been trying research which sleeping bag to get and frankly there is too much information on the internet. Initially i only want it for a festival in the the uk at the end of august but i have been contemplating doing a bit of uk based bike touring. I will not be touring in the cold weather.

Can i get a decent bag for 30-40 quid?

Mountain Equipment Starlight I, £40 from Go Outdoors: http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/starlight-i-p151817

Warm enough for summer, and packs fairly small. I've got an older version of this, its a decent quality bag. Especially for that price.

Over budget, I know, but as I hate mummy-shaped bags, I bought one of these. Packs tiny and warm enough for your needs.

My cheapo (£6 IIRC) sleeping bag from Sainsburys has served me very well. If you want something that isn't quite so bulky, I bought one from Tesco for about £15 which I've carried for sleeping in bus shelters or under the stars in dry weather, though it's not quite as warm as my bulkier cheapo sleeping bag.
I once toured for the most part of 5 months usimg a cheap supermarket sleeping bag.

As a follow-on to fuaran's post, there are many sleeping bags on sale at Go Outdoors at the moment, so opportunities to get quite a lot for your £30-£40 :)

Thanks for the input, I checked the comfort rating on my current cheapo bag, its only 15 degrees. This might explain why I have felt chilly in it on a few occassions.

Yeah, it's important to take recommendations for things like sleeping bags, mats, jackets etc with a hefty pinch of salt.  Some people are impervious to cold, while others are perpetually shivering.

I wouldn't go near a sleeping bag with a comfort rating much above 5C for a British Summer.  Indeed, I use a three-season bag all year round.  Cooling down a sleeping bag is just a matter of zips, making one warmer requires the foresight to bring some silk liners at a bare minimum.

Unfortunately, cheap means synthetic, and synthetic means either cold or bulky...

My 'best' summerweight sleeping bag has a rating of 2C.

That's realistic if you are actually camping.

the 15C ones are for sleepovers indoors and sofa surfing.

That vango looks pretty good especially at 15 quid, I've managed to borrow a snugpak jungle bag from my brother, I'm going to give it a test out this weekend.
