London cabs on fire
« on: 17 September, 2008, 04:04:51 pm »
Heads up:

Just heard on radio 4 that London Cabs have started to spontaneously combust. Is hot air involved by any chance?

It's the amount of lard they have to carry around.  Puts a strain on the engine.

ALL London cabs? One after the other?
Are we suddenly in a new episode of Doctor Who?
Have the doors mysteriously locked themselves, and has UNIT picked up a huge spaceship on its radar?

Wow 500 black cabs have been recalled by the manufacturer, seven have spontaneously set on fire so far.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Fewer cabs on the road should make it a lot safer for all London cyclists.

BBC NEWS | England | London | Fires force black cabs off roads

*bites tongue*

So that's what you have to do to have your licence suspended? Not have your vehicle inspected within two weeks after the recall.  Cause you can keep your licence without bother if you use your cab as a weapon.

We know it's not really a manufacturing fault.  We know the real reason.

A London cyclist with latent pyrokinetic powers has finally been pushed too far.

It's going to be like Carrie on fixies.

C'mon, who hasn't given one the evil eye and hoped, nay, expected it to go up in a foom of dirty smoke and flames?

Maybe it's just the fiery temper of the drivers that's set it off?

Top priority

The spokeswoman said TfL had written to all affected taxi owners and advised them their vehicle must pass the inspection by the deadline or have their licence suspended.

"The safety of London's black cab drivers and their passengers is our top priority," she said.

So, sod the safety of everyone else- let the cabs maim and kill other road users as long as the drivers and passengers are safe :demon:

Maybe Boris might reconsider changing the inspection regime on black cabs back to 6 monthly. He's just agreed to let them go 12 months between MOT inspections. Pretty astonishing when you realise the sort of annual mileage they expect to cover.

It does occur to me that there may be TX4s outside London (well - we have "black" cabs too here in the Athens of the North and some of them are pretty new).  No doubt the relevant licensing authorities are on the case ...

I'm quite disappointed that I haven't seen any on fire yet.  :(

Perhaps I ought to test their flame-retardant abilities...?
