thoroughly enjoyed that today depite the Pebmarsh skog, dazzling sun, headwind from Mersea, impatient drivers and all the usual crap.

Bloody cold at times, but a cracking ride to blow away the winter cobwebs adn try to get some semblence of recumbent fitness back again.

Thanks Graham

On the S40 or M5? I’m presuming former if you noticed headwinds.

S40, sold the M5 a while ago. It would have been suited to this ride as well though.

You do notice a headwind on the S40 if strong enough, but its a much easier Audax ride overall, especially on the back roads where the surface is not so good. Up on Islay last summer it was blowing a hoolie down past the airport, but I was still better off than the upwrongs, slowly reeling in a pair working quite hard up ahead of me. You still feel it, but just go that bit quicker for the same effort, or get an easier ride at the same speed.

The friend I managed to persuade to accompany on the Oyster (a lovely ride BTW, thanks) has expressed interest in the Knights Templar too. Excellent. I'll have him hooked on 200s by the time we get to the warmer parts of the year.
Huggy - will you be allowing early starts this weekend?

Booked in at Feering Travelodge tomorrow night; I presume I can ride the wrong way down the A12 cyclepath to get to the start (and also from Colchester station) ?

Plotted an ECE back to Tilbury thence over the ferry to somewhere avoiding the revelling crowds of SE Lahndon / Kent

You certainly can, we've ridden that A12 path from Marks Tey to Witham a couple of times

You can ride the wrong way down any road. The question is whether you may. :demon: :demon:

There's also an incidental question of whether you'll survive :o

Yes - A12 cycle path from Kelvedon to Witham is a well worn route. Not a nice one, but useful if need to get to Witham promptly. I'll likely be on it sometime around 9am tomorrow.

It’s looking a bit blowy tomorrow. My ECE to Witham will be plain sailing, but a bit of tacking might be required on the first half of the Knight’s Templar. As for my return ECE, I’ve tried to include as many hedgerows as possible to ease the battle into the strengthening wind.

All fair though, and dry, so overall should be a grand day out.

127 entries at present for the last of the series.  Still a few more hours of online entry time to go, in fact, one more hour than we have left in the EU, with the option of on-the-line too.
Hopefully the breeze forecast won't put too many off.

Crosswind, headwind, crosswind, tailwind, crosswind ...

I'm on escort duties for Deniece: no ECE tomorrow and will schedule for a proper full-value ride, to take some of the time pressure off.

Double Tiptree Tearooms as enjoyed with The Straggler on the helpers ride, still an hour in hand at the end. Note that lunch menu ends at 3pm at Cressing, but sticky toffee pudding and custard was not too shabby, other cakes and treats are available. Raymond being hard had icecream, usual winter fare. I think the Mersea oysters messed up his digestive system.

The return ECE leg via the Tilbury ferry was nice with the (novel for Essex) BIG HILL until Wickford but horrid after. just a succession of busy roads and roundabouts but didn't have much choice I needed the shortest route to make the last boat. But my first water assisted extension.
Cracking calendar event loved the mystery tour with notes about the KT

Thanks Huggy and team 2 down 2 to go for the shiny

That's my 4th Winter Series done! Non-ECE-ing yesterday's ride appreciated for novelty value, arrivee beer and laughs. Once in a while it's good to stop taking the sport seriously.

D is well on the comeback trail.  We opted for garage, shop and roadside snack stops, amazingly managed to get back at sunset! I was all psyched-up for the last hour in the dark!

Thank you Huggy, JJ and assorted controllers + helpers.

Lovely day out, especially with the wind behind. Thanks to those manning the controls - always nice to see a friendly face (and Jibber's).  Apologies to those at the arrive to whom I made ungracious remarks regarding their return leg being into the wind ;D
And Martin, sorry to hear you got a visitation on the much-heralded A12 cycle-route. Obviously not swept by the ACME team recently.

Does anyone know the date for the Essex RRRs this November*? Will probably use my aborted Travelodge from this weekend for that instead

or even November 2021?  :-\

It'll be the first Saturday of November, just duplicated it in the planner for 7th November 2020.
Hopefully we'll all be allowed out to play again by then.
