Not very useful for carrying bikes, although Bikenerd will testify to the fact that I got one in the passenger compartment eventually.

More impressive was when I got a set of car wheels and *unmounted* tyres in it.

Pre-2001 car, before the rules changed.  The DVLA "tolerated" them until then, and it's not an MoT-able factor.  I agree, you couldn't use a sticky plate on a Mk3.

Lovely, isn't he? He's a 1992 Limited Last Edition 2.1 water-cooled fuel-injected petrol Multivan. The only flat-four VW van that could keep up with general traffic! I turned down £10k cash for him a couple of weeks ago...
