Not a caption, but an observation, as an engineering geologist who moved a lot of muck in his career.  There are no dump trucks on the job (there are 2 parked up though).  So the diggers are simply moving muck from one place to another.  Achieving nothing.  This looks plain stupid to me.  Looks like someone told someone else to hit the job with as much plant as they could find, without any plan for how to use it to achieve some useful end result.

Reverse-googling reveals that the photo's from AP on the coronavirus story: "Heavy equipment works at a construction site for a field hospital in Wuhan in central China’s Hubei Province." apparently.  Perhaps all they're doing is smoothing the ground a bit (digging in undergrowth?) before setting up tents and stuff?

Not tents, a pre-fab hospital, built in a week.

72 people have died, don't you know. Fewer people die from pollution and car crashes each week...

China is just amazing at civil engineering projects.

If all they wanted to achieve was a level surface, get a couple of dozers in with laser guidance (very common practice).  They'd have been done in a day or so.  And they already have a dozer on site, presumably they could find one or 2 more.  If you want to level a site, hitting it with a multitude of diggers is the last way to go about it.  Muppets.  Propaganda publicity shots.

There's a video circulating on the web.  It comes across like one of the construction montages from Challenge Anneka, scaled up by a couple of orders of magnitude, and features more varied construction equipment in an impressive feat of choreography that seems to involve more driving around than actual construction work...

The other thought that occurs is that "we're going to need diggers, lots of diggers" is a fairly alarming reaction to an epidemic, and you might want to give the public an alternative reason for needing them.

Apparently somebody has looked through the time-lapse for the new hospitals and noted that there were very few toilets in the new hospitals. That isn't such a problem if they are morgues or suchlike.
