That's a shame: I met him on the moor above the SEEKRIT KONTROL, while I was looking for a rider in distress.  He looked ok then and pretty in purple.  Hard lines Ashaman.

It's all good. I knew it was all going wrong early enough to turn back rather than strand myself so now I'm just gently pootling back.

Have had an extended late lunch here at Louth and then will do the next leg once it's a bit cooler.

And it's been nice to meet so many forum folk, glad I wore the yacf jersey.

Good you can be relaxed about it, A.  It's fabulous weather to be out in, if you take precautions and are not against the clock.  Was it a conscious decision to wear the purple yacf top while you were crossing the heather; are you just a natural dude?!  It was a fabulous night under that golden moon.  I stayed up long after my shift ended, just to be out on a night like that, miles from anywhere under the stars.  Get home safely.

Are the road conditions north of the border usually this poor - potholes mainly?

The section from Edinburgh to Innerleithen was particularly bad .

I went down on the last main decent around 10km to Innerleithen, around 2.30am this morning. The pothole was deep rather than wide. It left me dazed but luckily there was another rider shortly behind me who stopped to help whilst two ride companions further down the road accompanied me slowly to the Innerleithen control

So that ends my LEL22 adventure. Although getting me and my broken bike home is another matter.

I have only realised today that the route (I am guessing that it is the return leg) passes by the front door of THoFC!!

Yes, the return leg.  Pity they won't quite see the fabulous old church at Leake but I hope God's on their side just the same!  Nice to hear from you.  Hope all is ok.

I happened to be changing trains in Carlisle just now and had a chat with 2 DNFs, E13 Stuart Ludlow and E35 (Italian, can't remember his name).

As mentioned elsewhere, I have been on a mini tour following the LEL route from just south of the Humber Bridge to Alston and back.

I crossed the Humber Bridge shortly after the leading few riders last Sunday afternoon and got shouted at by a small group of the LEL volunteers at the entrance to the bridge.  I know that the East side of the bridge was closed to the general public but as I was going in the same direction of the riders and wanted to take a few photos, what was the problem?

I stamped Chris Whitty’s card. Not that one either.

I hope he said 'Don't stop me now' or '(it's not a) bicycle race'.

Made it back under my own steam. Even had just enough left to go up and down the road until my recorded 993km ticked over the 1000 mark.

As I understand the chinese whispers received here in Boston the bridge authority threatened to close the bridge crossing entirely during the return night if *any* non-event riders (or volunteer pedestrians) were found on the bridge during the grace period.
This - I gather - follows an issue on the northbound leg.
You were a non-event photographer and were potentially putting the goodwill of the bridge authority on the edge, and risking that entire leg being a diversion through Goole.
If I'd been a volunteer under that sort of pressure, I'd have shouted at you.
Sorry and all that.

Firstly, it was not during the night that I crossed the bridge but more like 2.30pm approx.

The bridge was still open as normal on the West side for pedestrians.

Although I was not an official photographer, I dont need permission to take photographs of anyone or anything

But you did need permission from the bridge authority to be on a part of the bridge that was closed to the public.  Which in your case you had not got.

I am sure that it was a lot safer to cross the bridge with other cyclists rather than risk colliding with a pedestrian on the other side.

I will send a copy of this to the bridge authorities.

Your behaviour was selfish and disrespectful.. The bridge was open to event riders and volunteers only. Every time a member of the public wandered onto the bridge we received a warning. Too many of those and we lose the bridge.

Please send them your name and address too, so we can at least account properly for your entitled behaviour.

Rupert, I think it would be good to take the heat out of all of this by just saying "Oops!"  You wouldn't have risked colliding with anybody if you hadn't been on the bridge.  How about "Sorry, my other bike's a Pinarello"?  :demon:

What's going on with this Humber Bridge closure? I see it refers to one side only, but does that mean the main carriageway or just the foot-cycle path?
