You'd think they would tether it more firmly.  I find it hard to judge the culprit harshly.  We've all been a teensy bit clumsy, haven't we?  As its creator says:

I definitely think they should painstakingly repair it rather than replace it - perhaps Japanese-fashion, with black or gold lacquer .  I think it would make it a much more interesting piece.
