2002.  Solo, 9 days, using random B&B's.  My first foray into 'long-distance' cycling (I personally think 100 miles in a day crosses the boundary into long-distance.)

My account on the Waitrose "Ultimate" site if you have 5 minutes to kill.

Now go and do it

Having re-read it for the first time in some years it's quite amusing to see how my perception of distance has changed in 7 years (mainly these last 3 years since joining Audax UK).

Even so, if I did it now I think I'd do more preparation and training for it.  I can't believe I set out from Lands End with so little preparation really.

Blind stupidity sometimes helps you achieve the "impossible" it seems.

Edit.  I wonder who Harry and Aubrey are (read the web diary).  Anyone know them?

Do you know what number it is in the Ultimate listing? - and is it hosted on your webspace or the Ultimate Links space?

If you can edit it you can fix the repeated misspelling of Okehampton. :)

It wasn't that Okehampton.

Eh? Unless I'm mistaken, there's only one "Oakhampton" in the UK and it's a tiny hamlet in Worcestershire. It'd be an odd route to get there at the end of day 1 and then cycle back South to Bristol on day 2.

The place in Devon is Okehampton.

Solo LEJOG on three wheels (Windcheetah) in 2002, in just over 10 days.

(Day zero was train to Penzance, ride to LE and back to Redruth.  Day 11 was Wick to JoG to Thurso, train back as far as Inverness.  Day 12 was train Inverness to Derby, ride home and spend the rest of the day wading through the accumulated junk mail.)

Staying at hotels and B&Bs, eating huge quantities of everything, making it the most expensive holiday I've ever had.

I did JOGLE in 1999.  I did it the 'wrong' way round, as I wanted to get to Cornwall in time for the solar eclipse!

3 weeks at 50 miles per day.

Were you clouded out for the eclipse?

Yes, but it was still fantastic!

After Kilimanjaro in 2002 I was looking for another challenge. Totally inexperienced at cycling, I looked on it as a purely physical challenge - ie how many days would it take. In the end I went solo unsupported JOGLE in May 2003 and completed in 9.5 days -

Highlight - climbing up through GlenCoe  early morning, beautiful clear sky, no traffic

Lowlight  - 12 punctures throughout the last day held me up!!

Looking for another challenge for 2010!

Did JOGLE as a 60th birthday present to myself.
My first bit of cycletouring actually. (but I learned a lot from it)
Did'nt bother with planning or booking accomodation as I had'nt a clue how far I could ride in a day.
The weather was atrocious all the way from JOG to Shrewsbury and cold from there onwards, but on the last day from Camborne to LE the sun shone.
Highlights were cycling up Glencoe (awesome) and all the rest of it.
Low point was arriving at the plastic theme park that is Lands End, and realising that I did'nt want the ride to end.
Time taken 12 days.  :)

A friend of mine and I did it in September 2004, a two-week run.

Me and my brother did it in 1985. Took us 16 days. Always meant to do the reverse but it hasn't happened yet!
