Ingrowing toenail
« on: 10 September, 2009, 11:45:23 pm »
what do you do with one of them then?

I've already delved in and rounded off the corner of the nail - what next?

Thanks.

Let the corner of the nail grow free out of the nailbed.
Cut nails straight across, do not shape the nail at the corner.
Ease corner out of nailbed with orange sticks.
Soak feet in brine.
Wear shoes which cause no pressure on nail.
Avoid kicking.

   Will give that a go
Cut nails straight across, do not shape the nail at the corner.
Will remember in future (think I tore this one off)
Ease corner out of nailbed with orange sticks.
   What are orange sticks?
Soak feet in brine.
Pain in the neck - but if I must....
Wear shoes which cause no pressure on nail.
Will take shoes off at work - that'll make me popular
Avoid kicking.
Mrs TC is in for an easy couple of weeks then  ;D

Thanks HM - will give some of those a try.

Go and see a podiatrist/chiropodist.

Feet aren't good things to fiddle with.

Yes but I'm a man. First I must ignore it and hope it goes away, then I must try home surgery. I must avoid seeing a professional at all costs.

I'm not sure exactly what an ingrowing toenail looks like BUT if the corner of your big toe nail is 'digging in' then I occasionally get the same thing.

If it starts getting sore then I do the same thing that the Doctor showed me 20 years ago.

1. Soak your foot for ages to make nail soft
2. get a small piece of ktchen roll (1cm x 2cm ish)
3. Roll it up and rub some germolene/sudacrem on it
4. Poke the 'pad' down between nail and skin so nail is resting on kitchen roll not the skin.

Note.  This may be VERY sore at first if you've let it get painful.

If you leave it in overnight it should relieve the pressure. I repeat process for a few days and it give skin a chance to heal whilst the nail is bent slightly away from skin.

If it's really bad then get to the doctors.

I used to pick/tear my nails as a kid and now I pay the price

I get in there with a rather nice pair of pincers and trim the corner, but it often entails a lot of pain/perseverance.  Incidentally, I always trim the nail straight across, wear well-fitting shoes (sandals throughout summer) etc. and yet they still ingrow to some extent.  My partner trims her toe nails in the Philippino fashion, which is to round the end off in the manner of a well-manicured finger nail.  She never has problems with ingrowing nails, so I am beginning to treat the straight across advice as bunk.

The great thing about in-growing toenails is the relief when they've gone!

My method's always been to lift the ingrowing bit out up with the blunt end of a needle to examine. If there's a big big digging in, it stays on top of the skin without going back. Use that opportunity to cut it.

It's not the right method I hasten to add!

If its persistent go see the doc. They will cut remove the nailbed on the side it grows in at. Have had this done on both my big toes. It's genetic my dad had the same done.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
