Though my route is absolutely rammed with cyclists, so more chance of a big body count.

This is a crucial consideration in considering the map. The fact that a non-direct route has fewer injuries showing needn't imply it's less dangerous - it could be that most cyclists don't use that route, favouring the more direct one.

Very much so - I consider my route along big main roads, mostly in bus lanes, to be very safe. The part where I always have problems is down a sidestreet I need to use to get to the junction near my house.

There really are astonishingly few with no other vehicle involved.

I had a very cynical* thought about that, last night:

The nearest fatality to me says:

15/4/07 Sunday 16:25
Female Going ahead left-hand bend
No other vehicle

A rider's eye view of the site, here.

Now, I cycle down there fairly regularly, and while you can get up a bit of speed down that hill, I really can't think of any way that you could crash hard enough to be killed there without some sort of outside assistance**. And it's opposite the entrance to the golf course.

Hit-and-run?  :-[

*I've obviously been hanging around here too long!

**Perhaps a major mechanical would do it, but what are the odds?

**A short definition of Seriously injured is an injury which involves treatment as a hospital in-patient.

No out-patient-only injuries are mapped.

4 (none fatal) on my current outward commute, including one just past FirstBorn's school  :-\  Rate: 0.8 per mile

10 (none fatal) on my (shorter) return route (Rate: 2.5 per mile  :o).

EDIT: Is Edinburgh *that* much safer than London??

An incident of mine where I was treated as an in-patient is not on the map.  It proves not all incidents are recorded properly or have the records passed on to the relevant departments, etc.  Bad.

I'm on there for the incident after which I woke up in Hospital at 4pm with no recollection of even leaving the house at 7am.  I've just checked my work log-book for the date at which the handwriting suddenly deteriorated, with a note "Off for 3 weeks - broken wrist".

I'm not on it either.  I have seen a similar map (forgotten location) that did show my 2007 ambulance ride.

Cross-Cambridge commute (CB1 to CB4), one-way: 5.5 miles.  18 serious, 0 fatal.

That only seems to show deaths, Gordy.
