Today was open doors day at the lab where we let the public in to see what we spend millions on each year.

Our lab (the computational biologists) threw together[1] an exhibit called the Genome Scroller that wanders it's way along the whole human genome, illustrating various bits as it goes.

[1] Threw together is a bit of an understatement. It was a considerable amount of work to get all the information to synchronise and display properly over 9 screens, including a 'gene timetable' that tells you how long till the next gene appears int he genome.
Here is a shot of part of it in action, click to get to the rest of my pics from todays exhibits.

Today and tomorrow are Embra's Open Doors days.  We set off this morning armed with the programme, bus timetables and a street atlas.  We then got distracted by a chilly but otherwise most enjoyable stroll along the prom from Cramond to Granton, where it was 1pm before we entered our first open door, this being the lighthouse.  Truth to tell we didn't find it very interesting.  We carried on to Newhaven by which time our appetites got the better of us and we caught the bus to Leith for a most enjoyable lunch.  Still time for a few more open doors but we got distracted again this time by the retail treats of Ocean Terminal.  And after that we caught the bus home - our most pitiful tally of open doors ever !  But we enjoyed the day
