But if the bridge isn't scary, there's a tunnel. There was actually a road round the loch fjord, which added a fair few kilometres. This is where Operation Source was carried out (the attack by midget submarines on the Tirpitz).

The bridge to get to Tromsøya, the island on which Tromsø lies.

and the bridge from Tromsøya to the mainland to the east. Pedestians on one side, bikes on the other.

This one's on the island of Magerøya, between the 7km North Cape tunnel and the 4km Honningsvåg tunnel.

And this, I humbly submit, is at 71º 00' 32" probably the northernmost bridge on this whole thread. You'd have to go to northernmost Alaska, Siberia , Greenland or somewhere like Svalbard to find anything nearer the north pole. It carries the track which used to be the main land route to North Cape. The bridge carrying the new tarmac road over the same stream is slightly to the north but is little more than an ugly culvert and not worthy of inclusion.

This is at Neiden, about 35 km from Kirkenes, about 35 km from the border with Russia and about 10km from the border with Finland.

On my way back from Kirkenes (a dead end unless you have a visa for Russia), there was a salmon-fishing contest, and the bridge was used as a vantage point by the hordes of excited spectators.

And that's the best of Norwegian bridgery.

A much bridgier day from your temporary Leftpondian correspondent:

The Chouteau Canal bypasses the Chain of Rocks on the Mighty Mississippi just north of St Louis MO.  The Mighty Mississippi thereabouts has some bridgey goodness of its own:

Little stone bridge over the Windrush in Bourton-on-the-Water. For added river-crossing options, there is a ford just behind it; the surface is rocky and rather unfit for cycling, though a horse rider was using it a minute earlier.

No consolation whatsoever.

However, what is consolation is that by this time tomorrow, I shall be lounging around in Chicago O'Hare awaiting a connecting flight to Rapid City SD where we will join a coach tour for a week which visits, amongst other things, Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse memorial and Salt Lake City. We later fly on to Denver where I have tickets to see a Bronco's game and will visit The Rockies and follow a map of the Denver Brewery Quarter (potential to get a tad messy) before flying back to Dear Old Blighty :)

If my experience a fortnight ago was typical of current practice, O'Hare has improved its act massively and you no longer have time to learn a FOREIGN language while queueueueueuing for passport control.  Anyway, bridges:
