You need to put that in quotes, it's exactly what the commentator said  :P

OK, it's a fair cop.  ;D

I wouldn't repeat it if it werent true though. The TdF time trial should have been a nailbiter, but was a washout in the event. I think the fact that it wasn't a foregone conclusion that Cancellara would win this year was what made the difference. That and the fact that Wiggo was a genuine contender.

Someone should buy Martin a t-shirt with:
"No, I'm Spartacus "

Brilliant! Yes, definitely.

Just reading this thread is exciting.  Martin is a very strong rider, and I am not surprised he won, but the margin sounds phenomenal.

Good riding by Wiggins, though.  Second to Martin is no shame.
Getting there...

The great thing about Cancellara is that he doesn't care about 2nd or 3rd place. He could've preserved his 2nd place if he'd wanted to but went for it till the end.

GB gets a 3rd rider in next years tt I think after getting one in the top ten today. Good news for Alex Dowsett.

Really?  If he hadn't pushed it so hard into all those corners, he might have slipped below Wiggo's time anyway.

To be pedantic, we got two riders in the top ten today!

I know, but by getting one in they get the extra place. I suppose I should've said 'at least' one in the top ten. Sorry.

Martin was riding in quite a radical position.  I'm suprised he could pedal, let alone breathe!

I missed it but it sounds like she won quite convincingly. And apparently, she's already won a few senior races this year. Sounds like an exciting prospect. Good on her!

She won with about 10 meters down to the rest of big group, she was absolutely the strongest rider,
and she  had time to celebrate while crossing the line

Going by the reports elsewhere on the interwebs, it was a cracking ride by Garner.  8) 8)

<gripe>

Lucy Garner's win is the fourth medal that Team GB has won at the World's this year, but the only reporting on their sports news site is for the elite category time trials. It's almost as if the BBC has a policy of "if we don't broadcast it, it never happened."

She won in style, absolutely smoking the peloton in the final sprint, but the BBC is leading right now with der fingerflingenkinde being fastest in second free practice in Singapore.

Oh well, I suppose there will be a minute's-worth in the highlights tomorrow...  ::-)

Been watching the women's race for an hour. Still waiting for it to start...

(Bodes well for the men's race tomorrow... Might just tune in for the last 20mins of that.)

It was a good race in the end. I've seen stages of the Tour de France with less action than that. It's fair what one of the commentators said about the problem being that there's too much at stake, and you don't see many breakaways because there's nothing to be gained by heroic failure.

The men's race tomorrow might be a bit different if Gilbert or someone tries something, but it could just as easily follow the same pattern as the women's race today, I guess.

Gilbert says that the race tomorrow will be very fast.  There are a lot of contenders and this will be no procession to the line for Cav.  He is certainly the favourite, but he will have to ride with luck and intelligence to pull on the hoops.
I hear that Depod Millar is going to be calling the team shots for team GB tomorrow in the absence of team radios.
I reckon it will be a good race to watch.

Latest weather update, sunny, little wind and up to 20oC.
So it will be a fast race on small roads. I had hoped for 5oC rain and storm, just to irritate the spains and italians.

But I predict minimum to crashes on the small narrow roads  :-[

Hmm I watched the women and now watching the mens and I'm surprised how many people that have/has retired. They must go at a fair speed since there isn't any nasty hills or bad weather.

Though the womens race yesterday was a good bit of cycling. 5th time on the second step for the Dutch lady and she showed it, though she have two other world champs.

Current average around 45km/h. That would be normal for TdF but a lot of these riders aren't at that level...

Ooh, and a big crash happens as I write. Sammy Dumoulin looks like he could be out. Could make life slightly easier for Cav. Also Frank Schleck and Michael Barry.

Some big sprinters on the wrong side of the split caused by that crash - including Thor, Dean & Haedo. Chasers now 2 mins down.

All the Brits safe at the front of the peloton, Cummings setting the pace. Sagan also up there.

Sorry, the gap is 2 mins off the race leaders, only 1 min off the peloton. But still five laps to go, so doesn't mean too much at this stage anyway...
