"Not everyone thinks they are the future. Damian Jones, cycle mechanic at The Hub mountain bike centre in Glentress Forest, near Peebles, said he “laughed” when he read about them in a specialist cycling magazine.

“In theory bamboo’s stronger than steel but we live in a very wet climate and, in my opinion, water will get in however much they treat it and then they will break. I certainly wouldn’t put my money into one. It will be an elitist bunch that buys them. You get people who are more like bike collectors and it will be more of a novelty item. I have seen these things come and go before.”"

Well, he's a pillock then.  Has he never heard of bamboo used for scaffolding in countries where they have actual monsoons and humidity and stuff?

He's also clearly never gardened. Canes hang around for ever!

When I got the Brom, I had a strange feeling. Like N+1 had been completed. Luckily, within a day, I remembered that I rather fancy a bamboo bike.

But I'd probably go for a Bamboosero, and do some good at the same time.

They seem astonished by the prices - at £1750 they're going to be rare, apparently.  That's probably comparable with a mid-range carbon bike.

One comment worries about how flammable they might be. I wonder what he thinks happens to carbon fibre when you put a naked flame to it?

Apart from the price, they sound great.

Charles Linskaill is an utter fucktard. Disregard everything he posts. Or set fire to him.

Indeed, I have several in my garden Phyllostachys Nigra, Phyllostachys Aurea and an Arundaria I can't remember the name of. Tough as old boots.  I've had cut canes which I've used for runner beans etc hanging about for over ten years with no signs of degradation.

The species used for bikes must be several orders of magnitude stronger.

I suspect that chap's never thought about the properties of wood either. There's a row of buildings round the corner made of the stuff that have been standing since 1315....

None of which means that it's any bloody good for bikes.

I'll wait until I see one in the wild before I believe they're the future.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I was no doubt alone in thinking this thread would have been about Egyptian Cheese manufacturers.
