Lucky finds by the roadside
« on: 10 July, 2008, 10:48:23 pm »
I spotted two items lying by side of the road last Sunday so went out last night to retrieve them.

Item one.  An HPX pump, size 2.  Stopped for a wee at a convenient place and there it was, lying in the grass.  A bit rusty on the barrel where it was open to the rain, but a wash down, a rub with some emery paper and wee bit o' oil and it's as good as new.  Doesn't fit any of my bikes  :(

Item 2.  A large alloy landscaping rake.  No motorist would ever have seen it, but a keen-eyed cyclist did!  Two broken teeth on it, but hey-ho.  You never know when you might need a big rake.

A dead badger the weekend before last. I am hoping that it will be fully ripe and ready to harvest by Sunday.

Yesterday evening on the way home I found a beautiful, ripe, unscathed peach! Very tasty.

Last night I found the will to live.

Now that I know applebag went back for a broken rake I have lost it again  ;D ;)

I found a soggy £20 note in the road whilst riding along one day. Bought me and the missus a nice evening out at the local.

Nice pair of welding mitts, brand new, tied together with a piece of plastic.

I found a KryptoFlex cable in the middle of Victoria Road in Torry. I had to wait for the pedestrian phase in the traffic lights to retrieve it

On the M4 a few years ago I saw a surfboad on the central reservation. I failed to pursued my travelling companion to get out to retrieve it even though the road was completely choked.

I found a ladies purse, complete with £10 , credit cards and some Next vouchers.

I handed it in to the police and a few days later got a lovely card and a box of choccies from the owner as a thank you.

Andy, we're talking about things found by the roadside, not new dogging sites!  ;D ;D
It is simpler than it looks.

A climber's chalk bag, but I couldn't think of a use for it so I put it back.

My dad, whom my mum asserted was of tinker stock, regularly made "lucky finds" by the roadside.  ::-)
For many years, his shaving mirror had seen previous service as the wing mirror of a lorry and their, ahem, "summerhouse" included the seat from a double decker bus.

Afterthought: applebag, do you think we might be distant relatives?
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

I still have the adjustable spanner from a Jaguar toolkit that I found in the middle of the road about 35 years ago.

A couple of weeks back I found a tenner and a fiver, yesterday I stopped to pick up a brand new bungee.  :)

A pair of heavy duty wire cutters were my last find, good quality too.

Many of my best spanners.

Several mini-pumps

several spare tubs (now less common of course

A parrot cage (sans parrot)

A set of keys - and following a hunch (a Triumph Herald fob) returned them to their owner some miles away

At least two mobile phones (returned - just find "home" and ring it)

Quite a lot of pornography (well, may not be lucky finds, but there certainly is quite a lot of it - and no, I don't take it with me!)

You might want to offer them to Oscar's Dad - he's in desperate need, it would appear... ;D
